ROLLERBLADING
In the early 1700s, a man from Holland wanted to skate on dry land. He put wheels on pieces of wood and put the pieces of
wood on his shoes. Then in 1863, James Plimpton from the USA made skates with four wheels – two at the front and two at
the back. In 1980, two brothers from Minnesota, USA decided to make skates to play hockey in the summer. They changed
the skates and made them similar to ice skates, but with wheels. These were rollerblades. Hockey players and skiers began
using rollerblades in the summer months and soon rollerblading was very popular.
Rollerblading isn’t easy, but for some people it’s easier than running. Rollerblading is great exercise, too, and is a fun way to
get from place to place. Also, it’s not as expensive as many other sports. You can buy good rollerblades for €75. That’s a lot
cheaper than a good bicycle!
