10 Hand Spa
Ms. Janeth J. Pagcas - Subject Teacher

Hand spa treatment is recommended to those who expose their hands to too much work throughout
the day for it helps replenish, restore, and rejuvenate naturally tired hands. Includes a long soak that
eases the pain and numbness and loosens dead skin cells of the hands. Hand spa treatment is done by
a professional therapist in different spa centers.
A hand spa treatment comes with a hand massage to achieve a relaxing feeling. But it becomes more
beneficial when the massage strokes are directed to the heart. It gives relaxation to the exhausted
well-being. Remember that the hands should be taken care of because they are the most exposed to
toxins.
BENEFITS OF HAND MASSAGE
1. It makes one relax
2. It moisturizes the skin with hand cream and/or paraffin wax.
3. It increases blood circulation.
4. It keeps range of movements in the joint.
5. It eases discomfort from arthritis or rheumatism.
6. It helps remove dead skin cells.
PROCEDURE IN HAND MASSAGE (RESEARCH)
PERFORMING HAND SPA TREATMENT
Cosmetics and Materials:
2 white towels
1 bottle isopropyl alcohol (70%)
Moisturizing soap/Liquid hand wash
Hand/Body scrub lotion
Moisturizing hand cream or lotion
Small basin
Water
Procedure:
1. Wash hands with lukewarm water and soap or hand wash.
2. Dry hands with a clean towel.
3. Apply scrubbing lotion to the hands, up to the elbows. Scrub into the hands up to elbows to
remove dead skin cells.
4. Wash hands with water and towel dry.
5. Massage hands with moisturizing lotion or cream. By this time, be sure that the paraffin wax is
already prepared and warm enough to dip the hands.
Remember this…
1. The procedure is also applicable using other hand spa ingredients.
2. Don’t forget to wear personal protective clothing like apron, gloves, mask, and hairnet.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF PARAFFIN WAX TREATMENT
Paraffin wax is the waxy substance especially used in making candles. As with the origin of the spa,
paraffin wax treatment can also be traced back to the Roman Empire. During that time, the Romans
poured hot wax on their bodies to prepare for massage therapy. Later on, the French started applying
paraffin wax to wounds to advance healing. By World War I, paraffin wax was used by the British to
treat orthopedic disorders in military hospitals. In the 1950s, it was used by doctors of patients with
arthritis. As years went by, paraffin application became a separate service. The service is a simple
process where the client’s hands or feet are soaked in bags filled with melted wax. Eventually, paraffin
baths have also evolved, adapting to different settings and becoming more automated.

MOISTURIZING PARAFFIN TREATMENT

Tools and Materials:
4 cups grated paraffin or white candle wax
¼ cup olive oil or baby oil
Plastic Wrap
Gloves/Mittens
Moisturizer/Hand cream/Lotion
Procedure:
1. Melt wax together with oil in a hand spa machine. Pour the mixture into a container big
enough to dip the hands in.
2. Cool the wax mixture until comfortably warm. To test if the temperature is tolerable, dip a stick
in and let a drop fall on the skin.
3. Massage hands with moisturizer or hand cream.
4. Dip hands into the mixture.
5. Wrap each hand with a plastic doubled with a mitten. Set for 20 minutes.
6. Remove the mitten and plastic wrap, and peel off wax.
How the Heated Wax Work in the Hands
The heated wax penetrates skin deeper, thus allowing the moisturizer concentrate into the hands.
This gives moisturizing therapy and longer lasting effects. If accompanied by a massage, it is more
relaxing and gives psychological effects because blood circulation is stimulated. Blood flows faster and
easier, and numbness and muscle pain are relieved keeping the body away from any stress and
tension.
Remember this…
1. For hygienic purposes, separate baths for hand and feet dipping.
2. Keep the bath always neat and clean.
3. Remove all jewelry and put in a safe place.
4. Both the cosmetologist and the client should wash their hands before immersion.
5. Remove oil residue from the nail plate after dipping when applying nail polish.
Where to Store the Unused Melted Paraffin Wax to Guard Against Bacteria
It is the cosmetologist’s duty to keep paraffin wax away from any contaminated objects so as to avoid
bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens. Paraffin is made up of oil-based wax so viruses hardly penetrate
it. It cannot be a breeding background of bacteria and fungi, too, since it does not have water. Keep
the melted wax in a tightly-covered container, in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and other
chemicals to avoid contamination.
AVOCADO AND YOGURT HAND TREATMENT
Materials and Tools:
½ of an avocado fruit, mashed
½ of a lemon fruit, juiced
½ cup of plain yogurt
Petroleum jelly
Long white cotton gloves
Moisturizing bar soap
Procedure:
1. Mix the avocado, lemon juice, and yogurt.
2. Lather mixture on hands and leave for 10 to 15 minutes.
3. Rinse off then apply petroleum jelly.
4. Put on the long white cotton gloves for an hour.
5. Rinse off with a moisturizing bar soap.
How It Works
Ingredients of the avocado and yogurt hand treatment, especially the lemon, have citric acid. Yogurt
has lactic acid that could help replenish the skin and give it a younger look. The vitamins from the
avocado have healing effects, and the petroleum jelly gives a moisturizing effect.
