1. Diplomatic legacy of Francois Callieres

In his letters, Francois Callieres was insisting on a number of points:

 The transition from temporary to regular representation


 For Callieres past events were a lesson, capable of illustrating difficulties and
misunderstandings
 Young diplomats must study all the public treaties
 The nature of war as expensive and wasteful pursuit; he struggled that France should stay
away from going on war
 Civilized behavior – the pursuit of interests in relations to other state
 Intelligence is necessary

2. The Belt and Road Initiative: geo-political challenges and opportunities

The Belt and Road Initiative is a strategy of global development adopted by the Chinese
government in 2013. This strategy involves building routes for maritime and rail transportation,
called the Silk Road Economic Belt. The project has THREE main drivers: energy, security,
markets.

Purpose:

 Build new economic system, idea of world community (really?)


 to deliver goods to Europe
 improve the geopolitical position of China in the world, SIDELINE THE USA
 create a network of 18 Asian and European states (3 billion people)
 economic reasons dominate political (China has conflicts with many states, such as
Vietnam, India, Philippines)
