Training Bench Commissioning/Circuitry Review

Objective:
Upon successful completion of this lab, the students will be able to:
 Identify the main components located on the Training Bench
 Using ANSI symbols, draw the hydraulic schematic for the Training Bench’s Power Unit
 Adjust initial operating parameters (pressure and flow) plus circuit pressure safeties
 Refresh your practical skills regarding the assembly of a typical hydraulic circuit as illustrated
by the schematic diagram

Lab Preparation prior to Lab Class:

1. Print the lab prior to your arrival at your lab class

2. Enter lab area with all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on and lab book in hand
3. Sign the lab weekly attendance sheet
4. Submit your previous week’s lab submission
5. Participate in the weekly lab overview as presented by the instructor
6. Draw the lab circuit(s) into your lab note book
7. Record examples of lab submission requirement (Results and Discussion/Conclusions as
described by the instructor into your lab book
8. Gather your lab partners and enter your hydraulic training cell

Procedure 1: Training Bench Familiarization

1. Locate the POWER Distribution Panel and the Emergency Stop Button for the Cell
2. While looking at the components on the Training Bench’s Back Board have your group
members identify each component by name. .
3. Observe the components of the Power Unit of the Training Bench
4. Make a “rough” ANSI schematic drawing of the Power Unit

Procedure 2: Training Bench Commissioning

1. Ensure the PDP and E-stop are in the “off” position

2. Ensure the vent handle is in the passing position
3. Turn the pump’s compensator to its maximum position
4. Turn the PDP and E-stop to the “on” position
5. Depress the training bench “on” push button
6. Turn the vent handle to the non-passing position
7. Adjust the Relief Valve to 1200 psig.
8. Turn the pump’s compensator to limit the system pressure to 1000 psig
9. Identify if the vent handle is venting the relief valve or the compensator
10. Turn the relief valve vent handle to the passing position
11. Depress the training benches “off” push button
12. Connect a hose from the pressure manifold to the inlet of the flow meter
13. Connect a hose from the outlet of the flow meter to the return manifold
14. Depress the training bench “on” push button
15. Turn the compensator’s valve’s vent handle to the non-passing position

16. Using a small adjustable wrench turn the pump’s maximum volume stop to allow 4 gallons to
flow through the flow meter ( Instructor must assist this procedure)
17. Turn the compensator’s valve vent handle to the passing position
18. Depress the training benches “off” push button
19. Turn the PDP and E-stop to the “off” position

Procedure 3: Circuit Configuration and Operation Review

1. Using the ANSI schematic diagram below as a guide, connect this metering in circuit as
illustrated
2. Using the adjustable orifice, set the retract time of the cylinders rod to 10 seconds.
3. Record the Piston Diameter, Rod diameter and cylinder stroke length
4. Upon completion of this lab exercise, follow standard circuit shutdown and hose removal

Note: this schematic diagram is incomplete and poorly drawn. Your drawing must include
all circuit components.

Summary

 Some of the Training Bench’s Power Unit Components are both configured and connected
permanently
 All components on the Training Bench’s Back Board are not permanently configured and may
be connected in any required circuit configuration
 Male Hydraulic Quick Disconnects on the components mate with Female Hydraulic
Disconnects on the hoses allowing for the rapid interchangeability of components and circuits
 All hydraulic circuits require the technician/technologist/tradesperson to set initial operating
parameters for the machine
 Initial Operating Conditions have been set during this lab and are considered the “normal ” for
all future Labs
 Circuit calculations for this lab should include as minimum the following force, areas, cylinder
speed, hose diameters, pump’s HHP and HPi

Submission Requirements

 Your Submission should only include the following:

a. Lab Report (follow guidelines in Formal Report Format)

i. Title Page
ii. Abstract
iii. Introduction
iv. Procedure (only refer to the instructors outline)
v. Results
vi. Discussions and Conclusions
1.
b. Using a Pencil and ruler draw the ANSI Circuit Schematic Drawings of
Circuit (label components)
c. Using Auto Cad draw the ANSI schematic drawing of Training Bench’s Power
Circuit
