INSTRUMENTATION I SYMBOLS AND DIAGRAMS Laboratory Procedure Objective:

In this lab, the student will take a simplified process flow diagram and place control instruments in their proper place. In order to do this, the student will need to know where the control instruments go and how to properly draw them. The result will be a working P&ID of the section of the flow diagram you selected.

Background Information:
The student will need to know how to read a PFD, P&ID and a symbols legend. The student will also need to understand how the instrumentation fits into the diagram. Keep in mind that this is a diagram, not an actual picture of the process. The finished diagram should represent the field and panel mounted instruments properly located and connected in a control loop. Look at several P&IDs before attempting this lab procedure.

Materials Needed:
1. Simplified Process Flow Diagram 2. Symbols Legend 3. Sketching equipment (pencil, straight edge, eraser, paper, template, ruler, etc)

Safety Requirements:
None required for this lab.

Procedure:
Steps: 1. Obtain and study the Simplified Process Flow Diagram. 2. Study the Symbols Legend. 3. Complete the drawing by including: a. a level control loop b. a temperature control loop c. a tower feed flow control loop

4. Determine where the sensing point and the final control element for each loop will be placed on the Simplified PFD and draw them first. Complete the loop showing the controller and transmission lines. Complete one loop at a time. 5. Determine whether the loop is a simple feedback loop or a more complex control scheme such as cascade or ratio. 3. Complete the final report for this lab.

Additional Information:
None

Findings:
Have the students write a short paper on each control loop included in the drawing and how it may affect the process. The student will need to turn in all of the drawings associated with this lab.
