MODULE
Module 1.1.
DESCRIBING THE SITUATION REFLECTED
IN THE GIVEN PICTURE
I. Course Outcome : CO2.1: Express oneself in meeting a client.
II. Learning Outcome : LO2.1: Describe the situation reflected in the
given picture.
III. Time Frame : 1.5 Hours
IV. Introduction :
Module 2.1which is entitled “Describing the Situation Reflected in the Given
Picture “is a one and a half hour program that focusses on teaching and polishing
students’ skill on giving description, being one of the traditional types of discourse.
Further, this module allows the students to acquire a concrete understanding on how
a particular entity is properly described verbally or in written form using appropriate
linguistic tools (modifiers).
The process therefore, consists of giving the students a photograph to be observed,
analyzed, and assessed in order to give a clear image of the situation reflected
thereof. The teacher then, can ask guide questions to set the scene, e.g. “Where are
these people? What are they doing? What do you think are they saying (Zemach,
2009)? After all these questionings, the students start to figure out situations and
present them to the class.
The presentation can be oral or written depending on what communicative skill (oral
or written) the teacher wants to assess in students. More so, the presentation is rated
against a rubric for verbal or written presentation.

Description is a kind of discourse that aims to create a picture in the mind of the
reader. To create a clear picture, you must include details that will enable your reader
to vividly imagine the person, place, or a thing you are describing. To do this
requires sharpened powers of observation on your part. Furthermore, to translate the
closely observed details into a clear picture, you must carefully choose words and
skillfully use them to enable the reader to imagine how something works, smells,
sound, or feels when touched. In short your sensory details must appeal the
imagination. Often the vividness of the picture may also stir the emotion. ( Agalabia,
1998 )
When people use description, they generally rely on one of more of the five human
senses to describe something so that it becomes instantly memorable and relatable. It
usually used to help the audience visualize people and places, but it can also put the
audience in a particular mood or create a certain type of atmosphere. The writer or
speaker uses nouns and adjectives to give the readers and listeners a sense of what
something is like materially. ([Link] )
