The voluntary year of social
service – get to know Germany
in a unique way
A voluntary year of social service (FSJ) offers you the opportunity to
gain valuable experience and get to know interesting people, whilst
working in social services. During the practical work you can acquire
important competences that enhance and expand your professional
knowledge, or provide orientation for your career choice. We are look-
ing forward for you to take this chance and get to know Germany in a
unique way – welcome!

The most important facts/requirements


• Starting date and duration: start only September 1st, duration
12 months
• Age: 18 years (when beginning), but not older than 25 years
• Language skills: basic German skills (similar to the B1 certificate
of the Goethe institute)
• Accommodation: single room with shared kitchen and bathroom
• Financial support: monthly pocket money and additional
­subsistence allowance
• Social benefits: contributions for health insurance, accident
­insurance and pension insurance will be paid
• Educational programme: The voluntary year of social service for
volunteers from abroad starts off with the introductory days.
During the year, you will take part in three one-week seminars
together with German volunteers.

Possible placements
You will be placed in a job of your interest, for example
• in sheltered workshops and homes for teenagers or adults with
mental and multiple handicaps
• in homes or day care centres for people that are old aged and in
need of care
• in church youth work.
