Title of lesson: Colours

Lesson competences:
By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
- to sequence the events.
- to revise colours.
- to use complete sentences.
- to answer questions.
- to observe and discuss the way the rainbow appears.
Materials; copy of “Colours”, handouts, task cards, pictures.
Lesson stages
Activity 1- Warm up
Aim: to prepare the students for the lesson.
Procedure: after greeting the students, the teacher asks for the absents.

Activity 2- Lead in
Aim: to introduce the topic/ to create interest in the subject.
Procedure: the teacher tells the students that she is going to read out some words and that they
have to choose one of them. The teacher reads out: red, yellow, blue, black, white. The students
tell which colour they chose and why.

Activity 3- Pre- reading


Aim: to answer correctly the questions.
Procedure: the teacher gives the students the worksheets and asks them to answer the first three
questions.

Activity 4- Reading
Activity 4.1
Aim: to read correctly the text.
Procedure: after giving each student a copy of the text, the teacher reads aloud the first
paragraph and then stops to explain that Newton lived 400 years ago and to explain the term
‘plague’. Then the teacher asks the students to continue reading on their own and then decide on
the best summary from question 4.

Activity 4.2
Aim: to check the understanding of the text.
Procedure: the teacher asks the students to read the text again and then label the diagram on the
worksheet, using the words in bold.

Activity 4.3
Aim: to notice the extra information on each noun in the poem.
Procedure: the teacher asks the students to read the poem and then they talk about the extra
information given about the nouns.

Activity 5- Post- reading


Aim: to encourage the students to be creative with the vocabulary they already know.
Procedure: the teacher puts the class into groups of three and asks them to write their own
poems with either red, blue, yellow or green. The teacher advices the students to have three
categories with three things in each category. The teacher also makes sure the students add extra
information to their objects. When they finish, the teacher asks them to read their poems and talk
about which colour was the most difficult to do.

Activity 6- Giving homework


Procedure: students are given a crossword puzzle. They are asked to solve it and write sentences
with the words from the puzzle.
