Cryotome Series Routine Maintenance Check List

Annual Maintenance Visit

NOTE – THIS INSTRUMENT IS A BIO-HAZARD. THE CRYOTOME MUST BE FUMIGATED


AND THE PRODUCT RETURNS SAFETY DECLARATION COMPLETED BY THE CUSTOMER
BEFORE SERVICING COMMENCES.

 Check Knife-holder operation. Adjust where necessary.


 Check Specimen Holder and Orientation Head operation. Adjust where necessary.
 Check the operation of the microtome. Adjust where necessary.
 Check the operation of the refrigeration unit.
 Clean and lubricate the instrument as applicable.
 Carry out the standard Serviceability Test.

Serviceability Check List

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE - REMOVE KNIFE BEFORE COMMENCING SERVICE.

1. Test instrument for Earth Continuity and Insulation Resistance. If instrument fails, do not
proceed with service until the cause of the failure has been established and the fault
corrected.

Keyboard

1. Check the Key board and Key switch operation.


2. Check window lock operation.

3. Check program key operation.

Knife-holder and Specimen Clamp

1. Remove and check specimen clamp and knife-holder(s). Clean, adjust and lubricate (use
P13880 Low Temperature Grease) where necessary.

2. Check fixing screws are tight on knife-holder carrier. Torque to 6Nm.

Microtome (Standard and Motorised)

1. Check front and rear rubber membranes for damage. Replace if necessary.

2. Check cutting motor drive assembly for wear/damage. Adjust/repair as necessary.

3. Check the tension spring for wear. Replace if necessary.

4. Check the lead-screw and trunnion nut for wear and excessive play. Clean, adjust and
lubricate using microtome oil as required.

5. Check calibration of advance feed mechanism. Adjust and lubricate as required.

6. Check correct operation of Advance Alarm. Adjust as necessary.

7. Inspect belts and associated mechanisms. Adjust and/or replace as necessary.

8. Check retraction for correct operation. Adjust as necessary.

9. Check crank arm coupling for excessive wear. Adjust or replace as necessary.

10. Torque check all hinge bolts (4.5Nm).

11. Check flywheel for deadlock operation. Adjust if necessary.

12. Check all microtome fixing points for tightness of screws.

Microtome (Electronic)

1. Check front and rear rubber membranes for damage. Replace if necessary.

2. Check cutting motor drive assembly for wear/damage. Adjust/repair as necessary.

3. Check the tension spring for wear. Replace if necessary.

4. Check the lead-screw and trunnion nut for wear and excessive play. Clean, adjust and
lubricate using microtome oil as required.

5. Check correct operation of Advance Alarm. Check advance jam detection. Adjust as
necessary.

6. Check crank arm coupling for excessive wear. Adjust or replace as necessary.

7. Check flywheel for deadlock operation. Adjust if necessary.


8. Check retraction for correct operation. Adjust if necessary.

9. Torque check all hinge bolts (4.5Nm).

10. If instrument has orientating head, check for correct operation.

11. Generally clean and lubricate where required.

12. Check all microtome fixing points for tightness for screws.

Refrigeration

1. Clean dust and dirt from condenser area.

2. Visually check refrigeration unit for leaks.

3. Check cryobar temperature. (-40°C to -60°C).

4. Check chamber temperature (-30°C).

General

Refit specimen holder and knife-holder.

1. Earth Continuity/Insulation Resistance tests.
