Lab 3: Summary Statistics

Objectives:
To calculate and interpret summary statistics for BMI data.

Task1: Manual computation of summary statistics.

A sample of 10 BMI measurement are given below. Compute for the mean, median, mode, range, SS,
variance and standard deviation.

27.8 24.98 26.88 25.72 29.35 25.9 24.84 28.12 31.9 27.91

1) Place the measurements in descending order in the table below. Compute for the sum ( ∑ X )

Observation Values (X) 2

Deviation Score ( X − X́ ) Squared Deviation Score ( X − X́ )
1 31.9 4.56 20.79
2 29.35 2.01 4.04
3 28.12 0.78 0.61
4 27.91 0.57 0.32
5 27.8 0.46 0.21
6 26.88 -0.46 0.21
7 25.9 -1.44 2.074
8 25.72 -1.62 2.62
9 24.98 -2.36 5.57
10 24.84 -2.5 6.25
Sums→ 273.4 0 4.74

a) Mean: __27.34_______
b) Median: __27.34_______
c) Mode: _No Mode_____
d) Range: __7.06________

2. In the same table, Calculate the deviation score and squared deviation score.
e) SS, ∑ ( X− X́ )2: ___42.7078____
f) Variance: ___4.74_______
g) Standard Deviation: ___2.18_______
Task 2. Generating Summary Statistics Using Excel.
Encode the sample (n=10 ¿ BMI measurements in Excel.
1. Using the Data Analysis Tool generate the summary statistics for the sample.
2. Place a snip of the Excel output.

Task 3. Interpreting Summary Statistics

Among the summary statistics generated, select the ones you will be using to describe the BMI data.
Using the selected summary statistics, answer the Research Question: What is the classification of the
BMI of the participants? Use the chart below as your reference. Answer in complete sentence.

As the result, the statistics shows that the BMI of participants got a total mean of 27.34 which is
classified as overweight and increased in the risk of co-morbidities.
