Part A: Solenoid

(a) Measurement of Bas a function of position (I =¿5A):

Length of solenoid = ___16.5___±___0.1___cm

Outer diameter of solenoid = _5.595___  __0.005____cm
Outer diameter of spool = 4.5  0.1 cm
Average diameter of solenoid = _____ ±______cm.

-3 1.46 12 17.60
-2 2.26 13 17.01
-1 3.70 14 16.06
0 6.44 15 14.58
1 10.24 16 11.80
2 13.92 17 7.93

8 18.17 23 0.44
9 18.04 24
10 17.98
*D represents the pointer reading in cm

Plot B versusD and determine the position of the center of the solenoid.
Comment.

(b) Measurements of B at the center of the solenoid:

I(A) Bmeas (mT)

1.01 3.50
2.00 7.24
2.99 10.99
4.02 14.85
5.09 18.9
6.03 22.4
7.03 26.2

1. Write down the equation relating Band I . Choose your xand y variables so that
you obtain a linear relationship between them. Plot y versus x . Draw the best-fit
line. Using linear regression find the slope and the y−¿intercept along with their
errors.

2
2. From the slope, determine the number of turns in the solenoid N and its
uncertainty.

(c) Measurement of B outside the solenoid:

Strength of B outside the solenoid = __-0.45mT___±__0.04mT____.

How does this value compare to those measured inside the solenoid? Explain.

3
Part B: Coil

Number of turns = 500 Average diameter = 13.0 ± 0.3 cm

I =¿___200___ mA ±___1%___

D, Distance of B (mT) D, Distance of B(mT)

probe-head to Coil probe-head to Coil
plane (cm) plane (cm)
- 10 -0.08 2 0.72
-8 -0.01 4 0.55
-6 0.10 6 0.33
-4 0.27 8 0.15
-2 0.49 10 0.04
0 0.71 XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX

Plot B versus D on the same graph paper that you used for the solenoid.
Compare the value of the field at the center of the coil to the theoretical one that can be
calculated from Equation 1. Comment. (Agreement should be within two standard
deviations)

4
Part C: Bar Magnet
Describe and explain the effect you observe when you place the bar magnet with one end
against the probe tip and then the other end. What is the magnetic field strength at each of
the two ends? Draw magnetic field lines.

One end measurement= -17.13 mT

The other end measurement=+16.89 mT
