FOREWORD

The continuous work with the Essential Medicines List, finding the most
efficacious, safe, available and cost-effective medicines for priority
conditions is a very important part of our National Medicines Policy,
supporting the missions of our Health Strategy.

I wish to thank all those involved in completion of the EML 2007.

Dr Roro Daniel
Secretary of Health
About the EML 2007

The Essential Medicines List 2007 for the Cook Islands is a revision of the
Cook Islands Essential Drugs and Medical Supplies List 2003 and based on
the World Health Organization (WHO) Model List of Essential Medicines,
15th list, March 2007.

The medicines are categorized in therapeutic groups equivalent the WHO

Model List. All medicines are also listed alphabetically. Each medicine is
listed by
• Generic name
• Formulation
• Strength
• Unit
• ATC code
• Remarks

Generic Name – INN, International Nonproprietary Name

ATC - Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification system. The ATC

system is a classification system for medicines recommended by the
WHO. The medicines are divided into different groups according to the
organ or system on which they act and their chemical, pharmacological
and therapeutic properties. Medicines are divided into five different levels,
resulting in a code containing numbers and digits. Medicine consumption
statistics (international and other levels) can be presented for each of
these five levels. The system has been in use for statistics since 1975.

Remarks - Specifies if the item is a controlled drug or is a medicine only

to be prescribed by a specialist. (Exceptions from the specialist’s
prescription can be given by the Secretary of Health if there should be
reasons for this; good examples are the outer islands.)

Doctors can apply for the importation of medicines not included in the
EML 2007 using the application form “Special Request for Medicine
Supply”.
