 BOUT LOVE

A
Anton chekhov

Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) is a Russian dramatist as well as

a story writer. About love is a story in which writer had
explained about Russia's perspective of love. He also
explains about types of love, categorising it into three types
viz. physical love, materialistic love and spiritual love. Alyohin
is the first person narrator of the story sharing his love story
and strifes he had faced - The core of story.

It was breakfast time. Berkin and Ivan, Alyohin's old friends

were enjoying the breakfast. Meanwhile Nikanor came to ask
what the guests would prefer for dinner. Nikanor had a puffy
face and his mustache seemed to be plucked out.

According to Alyohin, the beautiful Pelageya was in love with

the mug cook. Nikanor was a bad tempered and drunkard.
So, Pelageya didn't want to marry him but still she used to
love Nikanor. Nikanor, being very devout, he didn't want to
live with Pelageya without marriage.

It was raining. Alyohin began to tell a story of himself to his

guests. When he was studying at university, he loved a girl
and lived with her. But every time he held that girl in his arms,
she only thought about money. It was a sound source of just
dissatisfaction for Alyohin. He had been a bookish fellow
when he was studying at university. So, he wasn't fitted for
any rough works. His father had borrowed a lot of money to
pay for his studies. Thus, his entire state was heavily
mortgaged. He had to pay off his debt. So, he had gone to his
village and worked hard in his farm. His work hummed. He
slept on his feet and frowned with disgust. He became
penniless. Later, he was elected as honorary justice of the
people. He had to go to town for court case. During this time,
he met Luganovich. Luganovich made a friendship with
Alyohin. One day, Luganovich asked Alyohin for a dinner.
There he met Anna Alexevina.

Anna was Luganovich's wife, young and beautiful. Alyohin

found something exceptional about her. In fact, he began to
love her. Everytime, he came to town, due to his works, he
used to visit Luganovich, just to see Anna. He grew used to
them and they grew used to him. Anna used to play piano
with him for hours and they used to talk together for hours and
hours. Gradually, they used to go to threater together. Alyohin
used to sit beside her with their shoulders touching. Her gaze,
her simple dress, her voice, her gait, exquisite hand..
produced extraordinary impression on Alyohin. Anna also
developed a feeling of great closeness towards Alyohin.

Although they were spiritually close to each other, socially and

physically they were deprived of living together and sharing
love. Due to this reason, both were tormented - whether their
love would bring a kind of happiness. Alyohin found Anna
unhappy and unsatisfied with her over 40s husband. Alyohin
thought that he was taking Anna from her one humdrum life to
another as humdrum as their relationship was not socially
accepted.

Due to continuous sufferings of mind, Anna developed a

nervous prostration and started to become moody. She
thought her life was without satisfaction and ruined as she
didn't care to see her husband or her children. She had to go
to Crimea for treatment of her mental disease. It was end of
August.

Alyohin had confessed Anna at the end of story. While Anna

was leaving the town, a huge crowd was collected to see her
off. Alyohin ran to Anna with a basket, she had almost
forgotten. He arrived and their spiritual strength deserted both
of them. He took her in his arms and kissed her. Confessing
his love, he cried and left back to his home.
