LESSON #3: Application Equilibrium Equations
In this lesson, you will be able to solve the external reactions of the structures using equilibrium equations.
All concepts sample problems and figures are from the followings books,
Hibbeler, R. C.(2017). Structural analysis 9th ed. Boston, Pearson
Leet, Kenneth M. (2011). Fundamentals of structural analysis, McGraw-Hill, Boston

Engineering structures must remain in equilibrium both externally and internally when subjected to a system
of forces.
The equations of equilibrium use to determine the support reactions for statically determinate and stable
structures on a plane.
Equilibrium Equations:
∑ 𝑭𝒚 = 𝟎 ∑𝑭𝒙 = 𝟎 ∑𝑴 = 𝟎
Supports:
To ensure that a structure or a structural element remains in its required position under all loading conditions,
it is attached to a foundation or connected to other structural members by supports.

Problem#3: (P3.7, Fundamentals of Structural
Analysis, Kenneth Leet, 4th ed.)
The support at A prevent rotation and horizontal
displacement, but permits vertical displacement.
The shear at B is assumed to act as a hinge.
Determine the moment at A and the reactions at C
and D.
