COURSE CODE: Calculus 1
1st Semester of A.Y. 2020-2021

Course Description Credit Units: 3

Knowledge of algebra, elementary functions and trigonometry is assumed. This course in

calculus is intended to develop practical skills in differential and integral calculus. As well, it is
intended to illustrate various applications of calculus to technical problems. The rules of
differentiation will be introduced, and methods of differentiating various algebraic and
transcendental functions will be developed. Applications of differential calculus to finding roots
of equations by Newton's method, to finding maxima and minima, and to developing power
series representation for functions will be studied. Methods of algebraic integration will be
introduced, with both definite and indefinite integrals being determined for a variety of
COURSE GUIDE

functions.

Course Outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
A. CO1: Differentiate any algebraic or transcendental function;
B. CO2.: Apply differentiation to determine roots of equations by Newton's method to
determine maxima and minima of functions and determine power series;
C. CO3: Integrate any algebraic or transcendental function either by algebraic methods, by
the use of tables, or by numerical methods;
D. CO4: Apply integration to determine volumes, areas, and averages and to produce Fourier
series; and
E. CO5: Solve differential equations by integration, by standard form procedures, by numerical
methods or by Laplace transforms.

Important Reminders

Please be guided on the following reminders:

• These are the following modes of delivering our modules and discussions. Choose
whatever application is accessible on your advantage.
• FACEBOOK GROUP: The most accessible social media application today is
Facebook. For our classes, we will be using the Facebook Group: TCC – Calculus
Class (www.facebook/tcc.calculus.class). Important reminders, announcements,
and course modules will be posted in here. Thus, you are advised to always visit
this group from time to time. EVERYBODY IS REQUIRED TO JOIN AND ACCESS THIS
GROUP FOR IMPORTANT UPDATES!
• FACEBOOK PAGE: Another Facebook feature that we are going to use for our
class is the Facebook Page: Quests of the Math Legends – QML
(www.facebook.com/QuestsOfTheMathLegendsQML). This page serves as your
avenue for the submission of your answers/outputs. Free Lecture/Tutorial videos
about the lessons will also be posted in here.
• MESSENGER: Messenger is a basic tool for a convenient communication today.
You may use this to address ESSENTIAL questions about the lessons to your
professor/instructor. EVERYBODY IS ENCOURAGED TO USE THIS APP ONLY IF YOUR
QUESTIONS TO BE ASKED ARE RELEVANT, SENSIBLE, and URGENT!
• YOUTUBE: We will also be integrating Youtube as an educational tool. Watch free
Lecture/ Tutorial videos about the lessons in this channel: Jimbo Antipolo.

• ZOOM-CLOUD MEETING: Aside from the offline module that we practised, we will
also be utilizing the Zoom application. The Zoom meeting usually happens every
Thursday of the week at 1:00 PM. Topics found on the given course module will be
discussed during the meeting with your instructor. JOINING IN THIS ZOOM MEETING
IS NOT REQUIRED TO EVERYONE! THIS IS ONLY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE STABLE
INTERNET CONNECTION AT HOME. FOR OTHERS WHO CANNOT JOIN, FOCUS ON
YOUR COURSE MODULE. The Meeting ID is 745 109 9979, and the meeting
password is calculus.
• GOOGLE CLASSROOM: If you have a stable internet connection at home, you are
requested to download the Google Classroom. The advantage of using this
application is the immediate feedback on your quiz/activity. This also allows you
to save paper because you only give your answers directly using the app itself.
THE USAGE OF THIS APP IS NOT REQUIRED TO EVERYONE! THIS IS ONLY FOR THOSE
WHO CAN ACCESS THE GOOGLE CLASSROOM. The Class Code is ca7s3a7.
