Introduction

According to DeNoon (2000) “A sleepy person’s brain harder and

accomplishes less” Sleep is said to be a complex of process of restoration and renewal
for the body. Most people benefit from at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, which
is an adequate amount of time for a person to complete a regular sleep cycle. Sleep or
having Lack of Sleep affects our attitude in many psychological ways. Sleep also a
natural state of the body where voluntarily bodily functions and consciousness,
complete or partial, are suspended. Sleep is essential to help and well-being. Getting
enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical
health, quality of life and safety but millions of people don’t get enough, resulting to
such problems like impairment of memory, poor decision making, interference with
learning and accidents. Sleep refers to state of lessened consciousness and physical
activity and a period of rest for body and mind, during which violation and
consciousness are in abeyance and bodily functions are partially suspended. Students
today have such busy schedules, however if they better understood the possible
effects that this can have on their brain and in turn on their lives, then perhaps they
would take a deeper look into their sleep habits. Since it appears that sleep effects the
body many ways, it seems imperative that the effects on a student’s academic
performance
The researchers choose this study is to ascertain how sleep deprivation
impact to student, and Determine the health effects of sleep deprivation and
consequence on academic performance.

Background of the study

Lack of sleep can change our mood significantly. When we have poor
and inadequate sleep. It can cause irritability and may cause stress. Whereas when we
have healthy sleep it can enhance our well-being. There is a study showing that even
partial sleep deprivation has a significant effect in our mood, attention and mental
states. When you’re sleepy you’re not able to concentrate on what you are doing.
Teenager like me may lose the focus, diligence and memory capacity to perform well in
school. Sleep has an impact our learning and memory; it is difficult to receive
information.

Based in researchers study, without adequate sleep and rest, quit our neurons
can no longer function to coordinate information properly and we lose our ability to
access previously learned information (Tomas, 2014).

While the brain has been shown to be very flexible, some effects are still shown
with a lack of sleep. One area of the brain shuts down, while other are over worked to
make up for deteriorated performance. The part of the brain that is overworked is
involved in working memory, planning, attention, and verbal fluency (DeNoon, 2000).
Therefore, this part of the brain is highly affected by the lack of sleep and will unable to
perform who has received an adequate amount of sleep. This lack of sleep leaves us
drowsy and unable to concentrate.

Significance of study

The Students:
The Teachers: This study can guide them on what to teach and where to focus on
specific discipline about lack of sleep.

The Parents: This study can give them ideas on how they support or guide their child to
avoiding lack of sleep.
