The Perceived Effects of Lack of Sleep on the Academic Performance of CEIS Makati

students for the S.Y: 2016-2017

Background of the Study

Sleep deprivation is a sufficient lack of restorative sleep over a cumulative period

so as to cause physical or psychiatric symptoms and affect routine performances of tasks.

When you’re deprived of sleep, your brain can’t function properly, affecting your

cognitive abilities and emotional state. If it continues long enough, it can lower your

body’s defenses, putting you at risk of developing chronic illness. The more obvious

signs of sleep deprivation are excessive sleepiness, yawning, and irritability. Chronic

sleep deprivation can interfere with balance, coordination, and decision-making abilities.

You’re at risk falling asleep during the day, even if you fight it. Stimulants like caffeine

are not able to override your body’s profound need for sleep.

In their book, Sleep Disorders and Sleep Deprivation :An Unmet Public Health

Problem, Harvey R. Colten and Bruce M. Altevogt, argues that nearly all types of sleep

problems are associated with performance deficits in occupational, educational, and other

settings. The deficits include attention, vigilance, and other measures of cognition,

including memory and complex decision making. This section addresses sleep loss and

then turns to sleep-disordered breathing and other sleep disorders. Roughly this is an idea

which tells us that it affects the actions and performances of a person and that sleep

disorders are caused by force by doing something in rush or under pressure.

In the same manner, a study was conducted by Matthew Schumacher and Desmond

Sipes, The Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Memory, Problem Solving and Critical Thinking

(2015), wherein the main focus of this research was to obtain a deeper insight of the negative

implications sleep deprivation had on particular cognitive functions. The research aimed to

assess the correlation, if any, sleep deprivation had on critical thinking, problem solving skills,

and short-term memory of college students (Pg.2). And according to the study conducted by

Jeffrey S. Durmer, M.D., Ph.D.,1 and David F. Dinges, Ph.D.2, Neurocognitive Consequences of

Sleep Deprivation (2005), Sleepiness, as opposed to ‘tiredness’, is another physical symptom,

demonstrated by our propensity to fall asleep or trouble to stay awake during the day. Although

not terribly common, light-headedness can also be a consequence of sleep deprivation. Often,

headaches and tension are found to increase after poor sleep; occasionally this may be

accompanied by feelings of dizziness and light-headedness. Emotionally, we may find ourselves

more irritable and lower in mood, as a result of poor or insufficient sleep. Mentally, poor sleep

may result in poorer concentration and memory. In research studies, sleep deprived people have

shown impairments in both sustained attention and memory performance, respectively which

tells us that having insufficient sleep can cause physical, mental and emotional harm to us and

people find it more difficult to perform to their full potential during the day.

It is for this reason that the researchers chose to write about The Perceived effects of lack

of sleep on the academic performance of CEU Makati students of the S.Y. 2016-2017. This study

primarily aims to find out what are the negative effects of lack of sleep on the academic

performance of CEU Makati Students.

The researchers find the study necessary for the following reason:

 The researchers are curious of how students handle academic pressure that further cause

lack of sleep. Because students nowadays do not take sufficient sleep due to social media

and school works combined. We heard many students in CEIS Makati complaining that

due to lack of sleep, they can’t focus on the discussions and also, the students are stating

that they cannot focus on their quizzes and exam when they lack sleep.

 The researchers are concerned about what might happen to those students who frequently

lack sleep. Because we all know that sleeping is important, you need it as much as you

need to breathe and eat and it plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout

your life. However, students (teenagers) underestimate sleep and its importance, therefore

leading people to not be as concerned with a proper night’s sleep.

 To give information that might be useful for professors on doing student assessments

whether they fail by lacking of sleep. For them to lessen the load of work they give to the

students and also for the students to minimize their stress levels due to loaded school

works and assessments.

Significance of the Study

The significance of the research may be posed as follows:

Insofar that the main focus of this research was to obtain a deeper insight of the

effects of sleep deprivation had on students’ academic performance. The research aimed

to assess the correlation, if any, sleep deprivation had on critical thinking, problem

solving skills, and short-term memory of CEIS Makati students. Deficits in daytime

performance due to sleep loss are experienced universally and associated with a
significant social, financial, and human cost. Microsleeps, sleep attacks, and lapses in

cognition increase with sleep loss as a function of state instability. Sleep deprivation

studies repeatedly show a variable impact on mood, cognitive performance, and motor

function due to an increasing sleep propensity and destabilization of the wake state.

Specific neurocognitive domains including executive attention, working memory, and

divergent higher cognitive functions are particularly vulnerable to sleep loss.

Insofar that the researchers will benefit all of the students by conducting this research.

It will give enough information about the perceived effects sleep deprivation that may be

useful for daily activities.

Insofar that the researchers desires to educate all the students in CEIS Makati

specially the students who are in the state of sleep deprivation, of the true importance of

getting enough sleep. By showing them the difference that a proper night’s sleep can

have compared to a night without the proper amount; hopefully people will then make an

effort to ensure that they get enough sleep to be able to perform well in their academic

performance efficiently each day.

Theoretical Framework

June J. Pilcher PhD & Amy S. Walters MA (2010, pgs. 121-126) conducted a

study on cognitive performances and on psychological related to cognitive performances

to 44 college students. The students took the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal.

After they’ve completed the cognitive task they answerd some questionaires The results

in the test describes that students who sleeps sufficiently are more likely to perform better

on cognitive task than those students who lack sleep and that students who are lacking
sleep shows more effort and are more concentrated than the other. The study mainly

suggests that college students doesn’t know that lack of sleep affects their performance

in their cognitive task.

The effects of lack of sleep of Heather Ann M. (2014). Students lack of sleep

impacts academic performance is slightly different from June J. Pilcher PhD & Amy S.

Walters MA. She said that sleep deprived students losses their concentration and that it

can lead them to memory impairment and may compromise their physical performance.

She also stated that students who are cramming and those who lose their sleep reviewing

for exams, doing homeworks or projects and the stress they get in it doesn’t do them any

good at all because in the long run, it only causes them short term memory. “Sleep is

important for every adult, but for college students in particular, that importance is

heightened.” It is because in this stage of being a student, they need to process more

SHORT TERM
informations from school or in life and for them to do that effectively they have to have

sufficient amount of sleep.

Conceptual Framework

Data represents the profile of the respondents’ base on the factors that may affect

Time Management. The study includes three factors that may affect hours of sleep by the

number of hours occupied in a day versus the number of hours that should be leaded for

sleeping if the number of hours occupied by the above activities to the number of hours

of sleep which may result to decrease academic performance.

Statement of the Problem

The following questions may serve as a guide in conducting the research and are

hoped to be addressed by the end of the study:

General Problem:

What are the effects of lack of sleep on the academic performance of CEIS

Makati students?

Specific Problem/s:

1. How many hours of sleep does students take?

2. What are the possible factors why students lack sleep?

3. How does lack of sleep affects students’ academic performance?

4. What are the risks that students are engaged in when they lack sleep?

5. Does the distance of school affect the student’s hours of sleep?

6. How does getting insufficient sleep affect students’ punctuality?

7. How does the factors that affect their academic performance relate to each other?

Scope and Limitation

The scope of this study is about the effects of having not enough sleep of the

students in Centro Escolar Integrated School and what are the causes of lack of sleep of

some students. Getting enough quality time for sleeps at the right time can help protect

your mental health, physical health, quality of life and safety. The researchers are doing

this research to know the different causes and effects of lack of sleep of students.

This research will primarily deal with the perceived effects of lack of sleep on

students however keeping in mind the objectives set at the beginning of the study, it can

only devote so much time in finding the negative effects of lack of sleep of CEIS Makati

students, nonetheless the following areas are hoped to be addressed ny the researchers:

a. Students in CEIS Makati needs right amount of sleep at the right time. Yet

this seems as the students in CEIS Makati may be turning a blind eye to

this serious topic.

b. This research will reveal the negative effects of having not enough sleep

and serve it as a warning to students as well as the professors.

c. This study will help us to know the importance of sleep in every student.
