“The Perceived Effects of Lack of Sleep on the Academic Performance of CEIS Makati

students for the S.Y: 2016-2017”

Chapter 3

Methodology

This research examines the The Perceived Effects of Lack of Sleep on the Academic

Performance of CEU Makati students for the S.Y: 2016-2017. The objective of this study is to

obtain a deeper insight of lack of sleep on students’ academic performance. The research aims to

assess the correlation, if any, lack of sleep had on critical thinking problem solving skills, and

short term memory on CEIS Makati students.

This part of study is divided into several sections, with which one addressing some

necessary components of the research namely: Research Design, Data Collection Technique

Used, Sampling Methods Used and Choice of Participants, Procedure, and Limitation.

Research Design

The research is primarily qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory by nature because since

it deals with the perceived effects of lack of sleep on CEIS senior high school students. We

wanted to get more details to dig deep to find new and accurate information.

The researchers found it necessary to use phenomenology as a research strategy because

it offers a more holistic understanding of a certain topic since it deals with the direct experiences

of not only the respondents but of the researchers as well.

Data Collection Technique

Since the researchers used qualitative data for its research strategy, they found it

necessary to use Maximum Variation under Purposive technique for their primary data collection

technique. Such means to collect data was chosen since the researchers’ aims to know the effects

of lack of sleep based on the respondents’ experiences and hearing it directly from their

respondents would make the data more credible and reliable.

The first interview conducted by the researchers was last February 20, 2017 whereas the

subsequent interview was held last February 22, 2017.

Instrumentation

In line with the problems objective set at the beginning of the research, a questionnaire

with the following items was used by the researchers.

 How many hours of sleep do you feel you need in a night to function well the next day?

 How many hours do you really sleep? Why?

 What do you feel in the morning after having insufficient sleep?

 When you lack sleep, do you easily forget the lessons you learned? In what way?

 How about during class, do you find it difficult to understand the lessons when you lack

sleep?

 Whenever you lack sleep, do you feel dizzy or cannot focus in class?

 Does lack of sleep affect your academic performance? In what way?

questions 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 have raised in the questionnaire and questions 1 and 2 are raised in the

questionnaire concerning the research problem that seeks to fin the possible causes of lack of

sleep that affects students’ academic performance.

Sampling Method/s Used and Choice of Respondents

This research has the CEIS Makati students for its target population and in order to

choose the individuals who will participate in the study, the researchers used purposive

sampling. Using the formula with 815 students coming from 3 sections of STEM (1D, 1I, 1L)

and 3 sections in ABM (1E, 1G, 1H).

Procedure

After determining the sample size and respondents, the researchers carefully carried out

the following:

1. The researchers determined the sample size and the sampling technique.

2. The researchers picked out the sections randomly using a fishbowl (as recommended by

the statistician).

3. The researchers made a survey form for the following sections to know who among the

CEIS students are qualified to the research’s criteria.

4. The researchers listed the persons/respondents qualified for the research.

5. The researchers got 8 respondents from STEM 1G and STEM 1D, 4 respondents from

ABM 1G and 3 respondents each from STEM 1I, ABM 1E, and 1H.

6. The researchers excused each respondent from their classes and conducted the interview

at the lobby.

7. While conducting the interview, the researchers are observing each respondent while they

are answering every question from the questionnaire and recording their answers with a

voice recorder.

8. After the interview, the researchers transcript the respondents’ answers.

9. The researchers made a summary of data information

Limitation

Inevitability some inconviniences however, the researchers encountered while conducting

their data collection. Some of these are listed as follows:

1. The supposedly 17 respondents from STEM 1D became 8 and the supposedly 4

respondents from STEM 1I became 3 because some of them were not present at the

moment and some of them didn’t allow the researchers to conduct an interview for some

personal reasons.

2. The data collection lasted for 2-3 days.

3. The researchers had to pick another sections using fishbowl to occupy the 10 remaining

respondents.

4. The researchers had picked ABM 1E, 1G, and 1H and we got 3 respondents from ABM

1E and 1H, and 4 respondents from ABM 1G.

5. When the sample size was completed, the researchers finally tallied and summarized the

data.
