CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Background of the Study

Every student's experience must include their time in high school as the most enjoyable. At this

stage, a person has already begun to transition from their childlike behavior into an early

adolescent. They develop into being extremely delicate, sensitive to any desire, and independent.

On the other hand, many people were still anticipating that they would perform better than they

did when they were younger, especially in academics. When someone is sleeping, their body and

mind are largely relaxed. Its muscles are relaxed and it is not moving. Sleep-promoting

medications include remembering, learning, decision-making, and critical thinking are examples

of cognitive function. As a result, sleep is essential for academic achievement. Understanding

how sleep deprivation affects academic performance will help you appreciate how important

sleep is, especially for students who want to maintain a high level of academic performance.

Sleep is incredibly important for life, but it is still undervalued by everyone. While people's

working or functioning hours are constantly increasing, their rest or even rest is drastically

dropping, which leads to sleep deprivation. And regrettably, people frequently push themselves

beyond their limits and jeopardize their sleep in the process. That is a grave mistake. We must

always be reminded that sleep deprivation is not something to be taken lightly because it is one

of the sources of our vitality. Something that is important to you could injure you in a variety of

ways. Your physical and mental well-being can be impacted. Additionally, your body won't gain

energy if you don't sleep. the power that enables your body and mind.
In this study the researcher’s objective is to find out the effects of sleep deprivation on the

academic performance of the students and if such effects are significant. One must also be able

to discover the reasons why they are having the said problem and be able to find a specific

solution of the problem.

Significance of the Study

As the study deals with the “Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Academic Performance

of Grade 12 Students in Eastern Visayas State University The researchers believe

that this Study will be significant to the following people.

Students. In this study, Students have sufficient knowledge about how sleep loss

affects their academic performance. And they are capable of understanding the

implications of that scenario.

Teachers. The study may act as an eye opener for the teachers as to how to deal

with the effects of sleep deprivation on their students' academic performance. So

that students can get enough of rest, extracurricular activities can be offered at

school rather than at home.

Parents. The results of this survey will provide information to the students' parents

on How sleep deprivation affects a parent's child's academic performance It can

have very negative effects. If so, they can assist their child with whatever homework

they assign at home.

School Administration. This study might assist the institution in determining how to

better organize and balance the school day.

Conceptual Framework

Statement of the Problem

This study aims of identifying the “Effects of Sleep Deprivation on Academic Performance of

Grade 12 Students in Eastern Visayas State University S.Y 2022- 2023. Specifically, this study

sought to answer the following questions:

1. How does sleep deprivation affects every student’s academic performance?

2. What are the possible reasons why they were lacking of sleep rest or why they were sleep

deprived?

3. Is there any best solution to prevent sleep deprivation?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

According to (Segaren 2019), learners make adjustments to inconsistent sleeping habits as a

byproduct of regular shifting schedules, part-time jobs, and extra-curricular and leisure, which

can negatively affect academic performance as well as health and well-being. They tend to

compensate for the lack of sleep by going to bed early on weekends or days off, but this only

aggravates their consistent cycle. The author also stated that if you are cramming and not going

to sleep, the important information you learned and believed you had remembered simply slips

out of your brain, and you'll have trouble recalling it the day after. (Okano et al., 2019)

discovered that both longer sleep periods and better sleep quality over the entire month preceding

a midterm were associated with improved test scores. Instead of sleeping well the night before a

quiz or test, it would be essential to sleep well during the day when the discussions evaluated

were lectured.

Sleep is a necessary biotic activity that gives people the energy they need to perform even the

most basic tasks, such as walking, paying attention, and interacting. Teenagers who are sleep-

deprived struggle to understand information, concentrate, and respond quickly (Persky 2018).

(Short et al., 2018) suggests that this type of insufficient sleep appears to have an impact on

adolescents' sustained attention performance in ways that are important to several normative

developmental domains, including their ability to pay attention and learn in the classroom

According to (Beebe et al., 2016), 87 young adults (14–17 years old) took part in a three-week

crossover study which included a week of normal sleep, an ideal sleep duration week, and a

fairly short sleep week. It was timed and took place in the online schoolroom. Participants were

requested to view lessons and take quizzes while being watched for symbols of sleepiness and
inattention. Teens displayed more behavior by absorption deficits and drowsiness after a week of

inadequate sleep (as cited by Sharman & Illingworth, 2020, p. 25)

According to Dr. Kushida (as cited in AASM, 2020), in the youth population, factors Such as the

self-reported reduced amount of sleep, irregular sleep/wake schedules, late bed and rise times,

and lack of sleep have been negatively linked with academic performance for teenagers ranging

from middle school to college. Numerous studies have also concluded that a night of insufficient

sleep harms students' academic performance. Whereas (Jalali et al., 2020) researched to

determine whether sleep disturbances affect academic performance. To compare sleep quality

and quantity, a particular sample of excellent or underperformed students was selected.

However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Several other

studies have reached similar conclusions

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

The study will obtain information from the Grade 12 STEM Senior High School Students in

Eastern Visayas State University through qualitative and quantitative methods in the form of

surveys which acquires the sleeping patterns from stated individuals, and psychometric tests that

measure individuals' mental capabilities and behavioral style based on their personality

characteristics and cognitive abilities.

Research Method

Since quantitative research is relevant to the topic, the researcher will apply it. In addition, this

technique will help in establishing whether or not there is a substantial association between the

study's two variables. Quantitative research gathers numerical information, performs statistical

analyses, and forecasts the results of the study. This is necessary to explain the study's purpose,

which is to determine how sleep deprivation affects grade 12 students' academic performance.

Respondents or Participants of the Study

Sampling Procedure

Research Instrument

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher initially obtained consent from the chosen participants to survey them as part of

this study. The researcher then made a request for assistance and permission to complete the

survey according to the desired timetable of the selected respondents. The researcher will then

confirm that each of the chosen individuals answered the question correctly.
