1. General
_______

R This chapter gives information and maintenance procedures related to


R placards and markings.
R Information about placards and the description and location of the markings
R are available from the sources that follow:
R - All placards and markings that are installed on the aircraft at the time
R of delivery are in e-drawing on Airbus World.
R - Procurable Airbus-proprietary placards and markings are available in the
R Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC).
R - Placards and Markings that are necessary for EASA Type Certification are
R given in the document A3XX EASA required placards and marking. This
R document is available on Airbus World.
R NOTE : The name of the EASA document is different for different aircraft.

R For the A310:
R A310 - EASA required Placards and Markings.
R For the A300-600:
R A300-600 - EASA required Placards and Markings.
R - Maintenance Procedures for removal and installation of placards and
R markings are available in the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM).

2. Labels
______

There are three types of labels:

A. General
(1)Standard type No.1 label
(2)Standard type No.2 label
(3)FOTOFOIL type No.3
Standard No.1 and 2 labels are in plastic material with white letters
on black matt finish.
Type No.3 labels are in 0.076 mm (0.002 in.) metal foil for use in
skydrol zones with white letters on black matt finish.

2 Painting :

a Apply paint where necessary (Ref. TASK51-75-10, P. Block 801).

1 Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tool(s) and

CAUTION : DO NOT USE A METAL SCRAPER TO REMOVE THE UNWANTED

MATERIAL. A METAL SCRAPER CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE
OF THE COMPONENT.
Remove the placard with a plastic scraper.
2 Cleaning
_
Remove unwanted glue with CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 19-003)
soaked with CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-002) then thoroughly
dry out.
(c)Close-up
1 Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tool(s) and
_
other items.

C. Decals
(1)Application over even or irregular surfaces (Ref. Fig. 002, 003)
NOTE : To prevent scribe marks on the aircraft skin, use
____
scissors or a cutter with a plate between the film and the
aircraft skin (0.6 mm (0.0236 in.) thick minimum with metal
and 2 mm (0.0787 in.) thick minimum with hard plastic).
You can also use a couppy cutter or spare blades.
(a)Decals applied over a joint between two surfaces which move with
respect to each other.
1 With gaps of 0.1 in. and greater, cut the decal at the center of the
_
gap and wrap the decal around both edges. See Method A.
2 With gaps of less than 0.1 in., cut the decal flush with the front
_
or upper edge of the joint and wrap the decal around the rear or
lower edge. See Method B.
(b)Decals applied across lap joints
1 The decal, when it is applied, is wrapped smoothly and continuously
_
around the edge of the lap joint. See Method C (preferred method).

(c)Decals applied to exterior emergency exit handles. See Method E.

1 Before removing the backing paper, place the decal on the handle and
_
slit the decal overlap around each rounded corner.
2 Remove the backing paper and apply the decal, pressing the overlap
_
around the edges of the handle.
(d)Cut decals, except pressure sensitive Polyester, around the heads of
fasteners on removable panels and punch the decal into the recessed
slot. Cut and remove an area of film, of pressure sensitive polyester
decals the approximate size of a protruding-head rivet or fastener.
Press the decal film firmly in place around the rivet or fastener.
Allow the adhesive to cure for 1/2 hour before sealing edges.
(e)Puncture the decal film, with a sharp pointed instrument, at each
rivet, of decals applied over pressurized areas.

D. Placards on Panels
(1)General
These are SPRINT 639 self-adhesive placards affixed to Plexiglas
surfaces.

(a)Job set-up
1 Clean and degrease Plexiglas surface to which placard is to be

affixed, using Material No.11-002 then thoroughly dry out.
2 Any drilling of holes or trimming of placard called for shall be
_
performed prior to installation
(b)Installation
1 Starting at one end, peel off the protective backing paper over 1 cm
_
(0.4 in.) approx. and fold back.
2 Affix peeled end to Plexiglas and gradually remove backing paper
_
while pressing down the placard on to the Plexiglas.
3 Carefully smooth out placard working from the center outwards.
_
NOTE : Do not soil adhesive contact surface of placard, refrain from
____
fingering that surface.

E. Identification Bands on Metal Lines

2 Band must be approximately 5 mm (0.2 in.) longer than circumference of

metal line.
(b)Installation
1 Remove backing paper.
_
2 Affix band by evenly unrolling and gradually smoothing out to prevent
_
formation of air bubbles.
3 Overlap band ends and smooth out.
_
(c)Protective finish
Apply two coats of Material No.16-003 to band, overlapping edge of band
by 1 cm (0.4 in.) approx. using a soft hair brush.
NOTE : In the event that Material No.16-003 protective finish becomes
____
damaged, two coats of Material No.16-016 shall be applied to
prevent attack of adhesive by fluid (e.g. hydraulic fluid) and
subsequent separation of band.
If film of material No.16-003 is excessively damaged, replace
band and renew protective finish.

F. Labels on Heat Resistant Ducting

Affix label with Material No.08-004 as per Vendor instructions.
2 Label to be affixed to fabric impregnated with Viton synthetic rubber.

- Material No.08-004 shall be applied only after Viton coating has
been treated with a bond coat comprising MB primer of the same
composition.
- Primer must be left to dry for 30 minutes prior to affixing label.

G. Labels on Laminated Tubing

on back of label.
3 As soon as adhesive softens and becomes tacky, install label and press

down on same especially around the edges.

J. SSO (Scotchcal Labels)

2 Prepare the bonding material :
_
NOTE : Obey the manufacturers instructions and the safety
____
precautions to use bonding material.
a If the paint is new, do the step that follows :
_
- Mix one volume of lukewarm water (by volume) 30 to 40•C
(86 to 104•F) with one volume of the fixative special
materials (Material No. 05-029 in a plastic container.
b If the paint is not new, do the steps that follow :
_
- Apply the fixative special materials (Material No. 05-029)
on the paint of the applicable area.
- Mix two volumes of lukewarm water (by volume) 30 to 40•C
(86 to 104•F) with one volume of the fixative special
materials (Material No. 05-029) in a plastic container.
3 Prior to application, immerse the labels for 15 to 20 seconds
_
in the above-mentioned mixture.
(b)Installation
1 Offer-up label above its location with markings facing contact
_
surface.
2 Apply one end of label to support while lifting the other end
_
stretched tight to prevent formation of wrinkles.
3 Press the label against the surface with a plastic scraper.
_
Start from the center and press towards the edges. Be careful to
prevent formation of wrinkles or air pockets. To complete the
operation apply a strong pressure on all the surface with a rubber
roller.
4 As you do these operations, remove the unwanted solution with a
_
moist sponge.
(c)Close-up
1 Apply the moist sponge on the backing paper of the label.
_
2 Wait for 2 minutes and remove backing paper.
_
(d)Check
If label is not correctly affixed ;
1 If label is wet :
_
Remove label and repeat procedure with a new label.
2 If label is dry :
_
Wet label with a lint-free cotton cloth (Material No. 19-003)
soaked with cleaning agents (Material No. 11-003). Remove label
with a plastic scraper or cleaning agents (Material No. 11-016)
and repeat procedure.
NOTE : Maximum adhesion is achieved after three or four days, do not
____
clean label area during this period.
(e)Protective finish
In areas which may be exposed to hydraulic fluid contamination, apply
lacquer (Material No. 07-018) on label, using a soft hair brush.
NOTE : Apply the lacquer only after labels have dried for 24 hours
____
minimum at ambient temperature.

M. DISA (SUPRAFIX) Labels


NOTE : Do not use in areas painted with Material No. 07-004.

1 Thoroughly clean surface to which label is to be affixed using
_
lint free cotton cloth (Material No. 19-003) soaked in cleaning
agents (Material No. 11-003 or 11-016 or 11-026) and allow to
dry.
2 Prepare the bonding material :
_
a Put fixative (Material No. 05-137) in a plastic container
_
(large enough not to fold the label) at 17 to 23•C (62.6 to 73.4•F).
b Prior to application, immerse the labels for 30 to 45 seconds
_
in the above-mentioned preparation.
(b)Installation
1 Offer-up label above its location with markings facing contact
_
surface.
2 Apply one end of label to support while lifting the other end
_
stretched tight to prevent formation of wrinkles.
3 Press the label against the surface with a plastic scraper.
_
Start from the center and press towards the edges. Be careful to
prevent formation of wrinkles or air pockets. To complete the
operation apply a strong pressure on all the surface with a rubber
roller.
4 As you do these operations, remove the unwanted solution with
_
a moist sponge.
(c)Close-up
1 Apply the moist sponge on the backing paper of the label.
_
2 Wait for 2 minutes and remove backing paper.
_
3 Gently remove the remaining compound from the label
_
surface and around the label with a sponge soaked in water.
4 Make holes in the air pockets, if any, with a needle.
_

(d)Check
If label is not correctly affixed ;
1 If label is wet :
_
Remove label and repeat procedure with a new label.
2 If label is dry :
_
Wet label with a lint-free cotton cloth (Material No. 19-003)
soaked with cleaning agents (Material No. 11-003). Remove label
with a plastic scraper or cleaning agents (Material No. 11-016
or 11-026) and repeat procedure.
NOTE : Maximum adhesion is achieved after three or four days, do not
____
clean label area during this period.
(e)Protective finish
In areas which may be exposed to hydraulic fluid contamination, apply
of lacquer (Material No. 07-018) on label, using a soft hair brush.
NOTE : This procedure is recommended to improve the durability of
____
the labels applied on external surfaces.

_ Clean the contact surfaces with a lint-free cloth soaked with
CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-003).
2 Remove the remaining adhesive compound with non-metallic spatula.

3 Use adhesive tape to show the limits of the bonded area.

4 Do a check of the condition of the contact surfaces and rework it if
_
necessary (Ref. SRM 51-21-10, P. Block 001) and
(Ref. SRM 51-23-10, P. Block 001).
5 Apply finish paint on the contact surfaces.
_
6 Remove the adhesive tape.
_
7 Clean the contact surfaces with a lint-free cloth soaked with
_
CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-003).
8 Use adhesive tape to show the limits of the bonded area.
_
9 Rub the contact surfaces with emery paper grade 320 to make the
_
surface mat.
10 Remove the adhesive tape.

11 Clean the contact surfaces with a lint-free cloth soaked with
__
CLEANING AGENTS (Material No. 11-003).
(4)Procedure
(a)Remove the protection paper from the reference triangle.
(b)Install the reference triangle with BONDING AND ADHESIVE COMPOUNDS
(Material No. 08-001).
(c)Use adhesive tape to hold the reference triangle during cure time.
(5)Close-up
(a)Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tool(s) and other
items.
