Coastal Carolina swept Arkansas State in a doubleheader to advance in the Sun Belt conference tournament. The Chanticleers won the first game 6-0 behind a career-high 9 strikeouts from starting pitcher Austin Kitchen. Lefty Jay Causey also contributed two scoreless innings of relief. Offensively, Kyle Skeels hit a home run and Cory Woods and Zach Biermann each drove in four runs. The victory was also Coach Gary Gilmore's 1,200th career win. Biermann, named the tournament's most outstanding player, felt confident going into the game and said playing a good team helped the Chanticleers assess where they stand.

Conway, SC. – On a beautiful warm and sunny spring afternoon, on the coast of South Carolina, in the new Spring Brooks Stadium, an exciting victory for the Chanticleers took place. Coastal Carolina, 24-16-1, overall and 9-8-0 in the Sun Belt conference knew what to expect after coming off a loss against Arkansas State on Friday night. This loss only built the confidence of the Chanticleers to return to the field on Saturday and compete in the double header against Arkansas State. Determined were the No. 10 seed, Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Saturday afternoon against Arkansas State, resulting in their second sweep of the year. The Chanticleers left with a victory, 6-0. Coastal Carolina continuing to advance in hopes of returning to the College World Series held in Omaha, Nebraska. Not, only an exciting night because of the victory held by the Chanticleers, but Coach Gary Gilmore also left spring brooks stadium that night with his 1,200th career win. Coach Gilmore has been a part of the Chanticleer family since 1996. He has obtained various titles throughout his time here. Coach Gary Gilmore has been determined to train and build his players to evolve into the best men and players they can be. The Chanticleers knows that the Sun Belt Conference is not just a breeze. They know that they must continue to compete and improve in order to reach the level of National Champions. Keeping in mind that everyone is battling for the same title, so if you do not win, you go home. Starting pitcher for the Chanticleers was left-handed pitcher, Austin Kitchen. Kitchen effortlessly struck-out nine batters, a career high for him. Kitchen’s phenomenal performance advanced the Chanticleers to 6-0 in the Sunbelt Conference. Lefty Jay Causey also helped shutout Arkansas State with one strike out, helping keep Arkansas scoreless for another two innings. Junior catcher, Kyle Skeels, executed on the offensive end with a home run, and two base hits. Also contributing on the offensive end was the junior Cory Woods and senior Zach Biermann with a total of four RBI’s. The intensity level of this game was very high, the Chanticleers had something to prove knowing that they should have capitalized in the previous game. Zach Biermann, named the Sunbelt Tournament Most Outstanding Player and earned a spot on the All-Sun Belt first team had no doubt that they would walk off the field with a win. “I felt really confident because I knew we are a good team,” said Biermann. Zach Biermann was a freshman at Polk State when the Chanticleers were named the 2016 National Champions but is constantly putting in work to in efforts to carry the Chanticleers to another championship. Biermann mentioned that “playing a good team helped raise our awareness of where we stand and where we need to be at.” The Chanticleers realize that there is much more work to be done this season and that they must work hard to improve every game and practice.
