Summer Program
A u g u s t 1 3 - 1 7, 2 0 1 8
NewSchool of Architecture & Design | San Diego, CA
NewSchool’s Neuroscience for Architecture, Urbanism and Design Summer Intersession Program guides architecture and
design professionals in an exploration of the juncture of the brain and the built environment. Program participants develop
a working knowledge of the brain and learn about aspects of its ability to process spatial cues. Studio work conducted
through “master classes” utilizes an evidence-based design approach, grounding architectural concepts in neuroscience.
Noted neuroscientists will describe current research and discuss its implications for design. This program provides the
unique opportunity to learn from renowned neuroscientists, but also architects, authors, theoreticians, and teachers.
This course is intended for licensed architects, urban designers, planners, design professionals, healthcare industry
professionals, doctoral candidates and post-graduate students in architecture and related fields.
This summer’s program expands beyond architecture to consider research-oriented questions in urbanism and design.
Special sessions will offer insights into how the foundational work in neuroscience for architecture may be applied to cities,
building interiors and products.
Included in the program cost is four full days of instruction and interaction in a range of activities from guest lectures
to master classes. An optional Salk Institute/Scripps Research Institute field trip is included and scheduled for Friday.
Participants have access to NewSchool facilities including the Richard Welsh Library, design studios and the Materials
Lab. Reading materials and master class supplies will be provided. Continental breakfasts, lunches and receptions are also
included. Participants receive a Certificate of Completion upon conclusion of the program.

Tuesday, August 14 - Rapprochement Between Neuroscience and Art | Architecture of Experience and Adaptation
Wednesday, August 15 - Neuroscience for Healthy Urbanism | Urban Design and Human Health
Thursday, August 16 - Neuroscience for Art and Design | Visual Response and Engagement
Friday, August 17 - Tour of the Salk Institute and The Scripps Research Institute (Optional)
Master Classes
Organized in a studio/workshop format, the Master Class is a practice-oriented program activity led by recognized
experts in neuroscience and architectural education. Participants will engage in a research-based design studio process
on individual and collaborative exercises that emphasize design thinking at the executive level. Topics include multimodal
perceptual experience, light and space, wayfinding and memory. A special master class will focus on Neuroscience for
Urbanism.
Guest Lectures
Leaders in the field of neuroscience for architecture will discuss their work as it relates to building bridges between these
two fields — and its potential for informing urbanism and design as well. Neuroscientists will discuss their research. Special
talks will be given on Neuro-morphic Architecture, Empathic Imagination, Neuro-phenomenology and other emerging
topics. Master Classes will be attended by most of these presenters.
Roundtable Discussions
Roundtable Discussions give participants an opportunity to engage in moderated conversations with guest presenters.
These discussions follow major presentations and will explore lecture topics and current research.
Field Trips
Participants will join urban designers and researchers on a walking field trip in downtown San Diego focused on urban
design as it relates to current neurological research. An optional field trip to the world-famous Salk Institute for Biological
Studies and nearby Scripps Research Institute is scheduled for Friday morning, August 17th. Billie Tsien, one of the
architects of the building, will lead the tour of TSRI.
Participants will have ample opportunities for informal engagement with presenters and fellow professionals. Breakfasts,
lunches and evening receptions at NewSchool are all designed to promote discussion and interaction. NewSchool’s
downtown location near Balboa Park as well as the Gaslamp Quarter entertainment district provides convenient
opportunities for interaction and socializing minutes from the school.
NewSchool of Architecture and Design enjoys a close relationship with the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture
(ANFA), whose formation occurred in San Diego and whose first home was NewSchool. ANFA’s founding president, John
Eberhard, FAIA, taught the first neuroscience courses. Several summer program presenters, including Thomas Albright,
Michael Arbib, Gilbert Cooke, Eve Edelstein, Sergei Gepshtein, Eduardo Macagno and Kurt Hunker, Acting Dean of
Architecture and Construction Management at NewSchool, are members of the ANFA Board of Directors.
