THE FARM BANK CASE ANALYSIS FORM

Name: NUON ChheangEng (ID: 80200190)

I. Problems
A. Macro
1) Frank Swain, president of the bank, wanted to modernize the bank’s operations with a
comprehensive management information system (MIS).
2) The system was designed to provide economic operating data for top management planning
and decision making, but most of the employees at the bank didn’t know how to use the system
effectively.
3) Most of the older vice presidents were making decisions and functioning pretty much as they
did before the MIS was installed.
B. Micro
1) The MIS wasn’t useful tool as Swain wanted, and it didn’t work well with all department and
the whole bank.
2) Mr. Al Hassler, vice president for MIS didn’t want to show the survey results of MIS operation
to the president, he seemed not to work to make improvements on the MIS for the employees
and the bank.
II. Causes
1) Mr. Al Hassler, was hiding the survey results a secret from Mr. Swain and the other employees.
2) There was nothing improvement on the MIS event the system was not work well and provided
little improvement in managing operation.
3) The employees hadn’t received any sort of formal training and most of them were not familiar to
the system.
III. Systems Affected
1) Goals and value: Excellence and organization improvement does not seem to be valued by most
managers except possibly Wyatt.
2) Technical: MIS needs new form and new limitations. These are not being carried out.
3) Structural: Chain of command prohibited Wyatt from improving MIS through using results of
report.
4) Managerial: Hassler is uncomfortable about taking things up the chain. Possibly the president,
Frank Swain, has intimidated subordinates in the past. Or Hassler does not want to rock the boat,
has a “full plate”, or maybe is lazy. It is difficult to access motives of managers
IV. Alternatives
1) Mr. Swain needed to ask to see the survey result and call for top management meeting in order to
make more improvement on the MIS.
2) There should be have orientation training for relevant departments and employees in the bank to
make them familiar with the new system.
3) The president should have known how the system work, he should meet the head of department
to make improvement or change.
V. Recommendations:
1) Even though the new system aims to modernize the bank’s operation, thought by the president
but he should have recognized that there is no perfect system and learned from the mistake and
lacking.
2) The top management should join with improvement progress of the MIS and they have to try to
adapt with this new system in order to make more efficient of the bank’s operation.
3) As Mr. Hassler has hided the survey results on the disappointed MIS progress from the
employees, they should have been taking care with the problems and call for the top management
meeting to find the best and suitable solution, to improve MIS, change or drop this system.
4) Since the MIS has been assigned, the bank should have trained all the relevant employees and
listen the lacking mistakes of MIS from them.
