Kamavacara Citta - 54

Akusala Citta - 12
 These type of citta is bound to give bad results in future.
 The three unwholesome roots are the basis for the arising of these Akusala Citta
 The 3 unwholesome roots are Lobha, Dosa, Moha
 So, the 12 Akusala cittas are categorized again into 3 as Lobha mula, Dosa mula,
Moha mula by considering the root for the arising of citta.
 The three categories are explained as follows;
 Lobha mula citta are the 8 akusala cittas which arise based on the
unwholesome root of Lobha
 Dosa mula citta are the 2 akusala citta which arise based on the unwholesome
root of Dosa
 Moha mula citta are the 2 akusala citta which arise based on the unwholesome
root of Moha

Lobha Mula Citta - 08

 The attachment, likeness, greed or love that we have for different things in life comes
under the category of Lobha or greed.
 As discussed, earlier citta always arise based on an object perceived through the six
senses.
 These objects perceived through the 6 senses can give three types of feelings as
happy, unhappy of indifferent/neutral. (Somanass, Domanassa & Upekkha)
 So, any citta that arise based on these objects will give you happy, unhappy or
indifferent feelings.
 Lobha mula citta will give you Somanassa and Upekkha feelings only.
 Sometimes these citta can be associated with wrong view or disassociated with wrong
view. (Dittigata Sampayutta and Dittigata Vippayutta)
 Associated with wrong views means thinking that there is nothing called good or bad
and no vipaka will arise by doing good or bad, there is no rebirth, etc.
 Disassociated with wrong view means thinking that there is good or bad, there is
vipaka for good or bad actions, there is rebirth, etc.
 Sometimes these citta can arise with the influence of someone else’s manipulation or
your own motivation. Also, these citta can arise without such manipulations. This
nature of citta is called Sankarika (with manipulation or prompted) and Asankarika
(without manipulation or unprompted).
 So, these 8 Lobha Mula Citta have these above-mentioned qualities in them.
 The 8 Lobha Mula Citta are as follows,

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

 These 8 can arise in different situations. Some examples of such situations mentioned
in Abhidhamma margaya by Ven. Prof, Renukane Chandawimala Nayaka Thero are
as follows,
 Eating and drinking tasty food for pleasure
 Planning or engaging in entertaining activities
 Collecting and protecting wealth
 Providing for families, entertaining with family and friends, going on trips
 Buying new clothes
 Parents nurturing their children and performing their duties towards them
 It should be understood that if you earn wealth with saddha, metta and karuna, they
do not come under akusala citta
 An example of a situation where a lobha mula citta arise is as follows.
 Having the wrong view that the wealthy people have more money so there is no
wrong in taking their wealth and stealing their wealth without anyone’s manipulation,
also with having happy feelings will be a situation where Somanassa sahagatha-
Dittigata sampayutta Asankarika citta arises.
 The same citta will arise if you enjoy a nice meal by thinking this food is given to us
by God.
 It should be noted that lobha mula citta associated with stealing are strong and will
surely give bad results or vipaka.
 But Lobha mula citta that are associated with actions like taking care of children or
liking the wealth earned are very weak and will not give results,
 Dittigata sampayutta citta are stronger than Dittigata vippayutta citta
 Asankarika citta is stronger than Sasankarika citta
 Upekkha citta is stronger than Somanassa citta

Dosa Mula Citta - 02

 Dosa or hatred is the disagreeing nature towards the object grasped by the mind.
 Since this nature is similar to aversion it is called Patigaha
 There are 2 Dosa mula cittas, namely;

 Dosa mula citta arise in situations like killing, harsh words, ill-will, stealing,
slandering when face with the death of a beloved, when faced with a loss, jealousy,
etc.

Moha mula citta - 02

 Moha is the thing that stops a person from understanding something clearly.
 Having no faith and doubting about the Buddha and his teachings is Vicikicca. The
restlessness of the mind is called Uddacca
 Moha mula citta are associated with these two qualities, vicikicca and uddacca.
Because when these two qualities are present in citta, a person is unable to understand
the real nature of things.
 Doubt and restlessness are two things that arise in your mind without anyone’s
influence.
 Since doubt and restlessness cloud the mind, a person is not able to understand
whether the feeling that arise is happy or unhappy. Therefore, the Moha Mula Cittas
are Upekkha.
 Two Moha mula cittas are;

…………………………………………………………………………………………………..

 These cittas are weak. Therefore, are not able to produce major results.
 But they direct a person to enjoy sensual pleasures rather than doing wholesome
actions.

Ahetuka Citta-18
 Ahetuka means these citta are not directly linked with the 6 basic-roots (Lobha, Dosa,
Moha, Alobha, Adosa, Amoha)
 These 18 are divided into 3 categories as,
 Akusala Vipaka citta
 Akusala Kusala Vipaka citta
 Akusala Kriya Citta
 These are all vipaka citta because they are resultants of past Kusala or Akusala.

 Kusala or Akusala citta gives Vipaka Citta. But Kiriya citta does not give any such
vipaka or results.They helps to do the particular action only.
 There are 3 Ahetuka kriya citta, namely,

 You get good Vipaka because of these actions.

 When you get good Vipaka because of these actions you can be happy and if you do
not get any Vipaka you are able to bear it with indifferent feelings. Therefore, these
citta can be either Somanassa or Uhekkha
 These kusala actions can be done with the understanding of their good results or
without understanding it. Therefore, they can be Nana Sampayutta or Nana
Vippayutta

 Arahants do not acquire merits or sins. But they engage in Kusala actions like
listening to dhamma, preaching dhamma, making offerings, etc.
 Since they do not acquire any merits by doing these actions, the citta that arise at
these instances are called Kriya citta.
 There are 8 Kamavacara Kriya Cittas,

 11-Kriya citta
 18-Somanassa sahagata citta
 32-Uphekka sahagata citta

beings. They arise only in Arhants.

Rupavacara Citta-15
 These cittas are stronger than Kamavacara Citta.
 These citta arise in beings who have attained higher states of mind like Jhana.
 There are five Jhanas, Namely;
 1st Jhana
 2nd Jhana
 3rd Jhana
 4th Jhana
 5th Jhana
 Each of these Jhanas have 5 factors or qualities that assist the person to achieve future
Jhanas
 These Jhana factors are;
 Vitakka
 Vicara
 Piti
 Sukha
 Ekaggata
 Vitakka enables the person to enter the Samadhi state.
 Vicara makes the person’s mind to be on the same object for a long time without
distractions.
 Once the mind is fully on the object without directions mind is awakened with happiness.
This is called Piti. It is a mental Happiness.
 This mental happiness makes the person feel a physical happiness as well. The physical
happiness is called Sukha.
 Then the mind will be fully concentrated on the object and it results in one-pointedness of
mind or Ekaggatha.
 The first Jhana consists of all these 5 factors. Therefore, it is called;
Vitakka, Vicara, Piti, Sukha, Ekaggata sahita Prathama Jhana
 After attaining the first Jhana, a person can enter the second Jhana. Since they have
already attained the first Jhana they can enter the Samadhi state without Vitakka.
Therefore, the second Jhana is;
Vicara, Piti, Sukha, Ekaggata sahita Dvithiya Jhana
 Likewise, the third, fourth and fifth Jhana are named as follows;

Piti, Sukha, Ekaggata sahita Thatiya Jhana – 3rd Jhana

Sukha, Ekaggata sahita Chatutta Jhana – 4th Jhana

Ekaggata, Upekkha sahita Pancama Jhana – Fifth Jhana

 The beings who are born in Rupavacara worlds have these Jhanas. They will have 15
Rupavacara citta types. These 15 Rupavacara Citta are divided into 3 categories as;
 Kusala – 5
 Vipaka – 5
 Kiriya – 5
 The resultants of the five Kusala citta are called the 5 Vipaka citta.
 Sometimes even the Arahants enter Jhana states. Then the citta that arise in them are the 5
Kiriya citta.

Arupavacara Citta – 12
 These are called formless citta because they are achieved by distancing the connection
between mind and body to achieve further concentration in mind.
 All the 12 types of citta in this category belong to Rupavacara fifth Jhana.
 A person who has attained the fifth Rupavacara Jhana can attain Arupavacara Jhana.
 After attaining the fifth Rupavacara Jhana, the person will realize the trouble that they
have to face because of the body and wish to be born without attachment to body or
formless.
