COMPOUND SENTENCES

A compound sentence has at least two independent clauses

(sentences) that have related ideas (two or more simple
sentences). Independent clauses are two phrases that can stand
alone as a complete thought. They're not dependent upon one
another to express a complete thought, but they tie together
similar ideas. The independent clauses (sentences) can be joined by
a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) or by a
semicolon.

Example: 1) The kite was caught in the tree, and we tried to get it
down. (This is a sentence using a coordinating conjunction)

Example: 2) Maya changed her kite design; she added two tails.
(This is a sentence using a semicolon)
