Module 1: Course Introduction and Laboratory Safety Guidelines
We all want to stay safe as we face the dangers and uncertainties brought about by
COVID-19 pandemic. Healthwise we practice physical distancing, wear mask and face shield
outside our residence, observe strict personal hygiene, and stay put in our house as much as
possible. However, not everyone has the prudence in practicing these health guidelines. The
prolonged quarantine period is also affecting us negatively in terms of economic, psycho-
social, and socio-political aspects. To whom can we turn for comfort, assurance, and sense of
protection?
As Psalms 18:2 says, the Lord is our rock, fortress, savior, shield, and place of safety.
In these uncertain times there is one certain thing that we can hold on to – God is here to bring
us rest, comfort, and peace even during this perilous time. Cast all your anxieties, fears, and
worries to Him in prayer, meditation, and worship. His love, grace, and provisions will give you
the courage and strength to face life’s challenges. God bless and keep us all safe! © Legaspi, 2020
Reflection Point: In what ways did you personally find comfort and protection through our
Lord?

Remember that learning is a cooperative and collaborative process between the teacher and
the students. As your mentor, I will give my best effort in explaining the intricacies of the
concepts and principles that you need to learn and master through the printed modules. I will
assess your outputs and give feedbacks for improvement through the official means of
communication that will be discussed later. On your part, I expect that you will be diligent
enough in studying through the modules and accomplishing the enabling and summative
assessments within the prescribed period. Let us work together to make your learning
experience enjoyable and fruitful!

mail address, and FB messenger if any), place of residence, and brief academic background. Please
explain your home learning set-up/situation so that I can better understand how I can help and support
you academically. Also tell me about your learning expectations via printed modules. Lastly, paste a
recent and decent close-up picture of yourself for our class record. Rest assured that all your personal
data will be handled confidentiality and will only be used for academic purposes.

2. Be organized and prudent in keeping your modules and learning materials. You will only
be given a single copy of the modules so be careful not to lose or damage them.
4. Establish a learning schedule and routine. Allot specific time for all the courses that you
are taking this semester. Do not wait to be “in the mood” for learning but rather establish
a habit of motivating yourself to study and learn diligently.
5. Read the lessons carefully and sequentially. Take a small break in between your
studying if you already feel overwhelmed and exhausted. If you are too confused about
certain topics, read through available reference materials at hand and/or seek my help
and guidance through our official communication channels.
6. Take note of key concepts and principles by using a highlighter, underlining the text, or
writing them down on a notebook for your future reference.
7. Read the rubric if any to understand how I will grade your output based on the
established standards or learning outcomes. Make it your guide in formulating your
answers.
8. Answer the assessments on a scratch paper first and then review your answers and
make necessary corrections. Once you are sure of your answers, transfer them on the
official answer sheet in the module which you will be passing to me for grading and
feedback. Keep your scratch papers as personal reference.

Module 1: Course Introduction and Laboratory Safety Guidelines
The on-going COVID-19 pandemic has forced the migration of teaching and learning
across all education levels to Distance Learning Mode primarily through various online learning
platforms. DLSU-D has been using the Schoolbook platform for blended learning for several
years already, making the migration to fully online learning a smoother process than most
institutions. However, the University recognizes that not all students have the means to avail of
the fully online learning mode through Schoolbook. As such, a Home-based Learning set-up
using printed modules is being offered to these students as part of the “Care-Centered
Learning Framework”.
Measures were put up to ensure that the content and quality of the printed modules will
be the same as the online modules. However, it is understandable that the technological
features of the online platform cannot be duplicated in the printed modules such as:
Lessons – the interactive and multimedia-rich features using MS Office suite, video
integration, online gamification, learning path directions, and many others are only
possible through the Schoolbook platform.
Assessments – the adaptive nature, multiple chances, variety of forms, and
interactive nature of assessments and its real-time grading and feedback mechanism
is not possible in paper-based modules.
Consultations – students through the Schoolbook platform can communicate with
their subject teacher in a variety of ways such as MS Teams, chat, direct messaging,
and online discussion among others. For printed modules, the means of
communication is limited to text and call.
Submission of Assessments – online students can submit their assessment
anytime and anywhere within the prescribed period through Schoolbook. For printed
modules, the assessments are sent by courier or in person if allowed under the
quarantine conditions on or before the set deadline.
The official communication platform for home-based learning is through text or call to
the personal mobile number of your subject teacher. You are not allowed to share my personal
contact details to anyone else. Text and call should be made during the stipulated day and
time only:
Mobile Number: +639293405872
For consultation thru text message: Mon-Fri, from 0830-1730 H.
For consultation thru phone call: Mon-Fri, from 1430-1730 H with prior permission.
Consultation Protocol: Introduce your name, section, and subject before your specific
concern in a text message. Seek permission to call by sending a text message beforehand.

1. Enrollment in an E-Class. Your teacher shall enroll you in the e-class. This will be based on the class list
provided by the Office of the University Registrar and at DLSU-D portal. For those who opted for printed
modules, you will only be given the module if you are officially enrolled.
2. Communication and Feedback
a. Online Synchronous Communication shall happen as indicated in the learning plan section of the
syllabus.
b. Online Asynchronous Communication shall happen when the faculty utilizes at least one of the
recommended asynchronous means of communication. The minimum response time for
asynchronous communication is 24 hours, excluding Sundays and holidays. All communication
platforms must be explicitly indicated in the syllabus. Below are the recommended asynchronous
communication platforms:
i. Forum – at the Forum Tab at Schoolbook, students can post their general concerns. The
forum is public and any post can be seen by the class.
ii. Messaging – at Schoolbook. Any private or confidential matters must be messaged
through Schoolbook messaging feature.
iii. Email – you may email your professor at lvfigueroa@dlsud.edu.ph
c. Offline Communication is only for students who opted for Printed Modules. Text messaging
subject to strict confidentiality agreement between the student and the professor maybe used. This
mode of communication is exclusive for the specified type of student. Calls may be entertained
within working hours (8AM to 5PM), while text messages may be responded to within 24 hours,
excluding Sundays and holidays.
d. Cursing and use of foul language is strictly forbidden whether in writing or verbally. Likewise,
shouting during live discussion, flooding of chat and messages, and online selling are not
allowed.
3. Attendance Policy
a. Attendance Policy for Online Classes is scheduled based on the learning plan. Attendance,
especially in synchronous classes, shall not be a basis for receiving a failing grade. It will not
comprise any grade in the class standing.
b. RSVP is part of the ethical process of conducting online meetings, as such the following actions
should be observed:
i. The synchronous meeting will be announced by the teacher at least 14 calendar days
before its schedule.
ii. The student must confirm his/her attendance at least three days before the scheduled
synchronous meeting.
iii. The faculty will announce two days before the calendared synchronous meeting if it will
push through or not. If cancelled, the faculty will announce a new schedule for the
synchronous meeting or the alternative asynchronous activity as replacement.
c. The minimum required attendees for a synchronous meeting shall be 50 percent of the entire
class. It is the faculty’s prerogative whether to continue or discontinue the session if it does not
reach 50 percent. However, if the attendees are less than 20 percent of the total class, the
synchronous session will be rescheduled; an asynchronous learning activity will take the place of
the supposed synchronous meeting.
d. All synchronous meetings will be recorded and embedded into a schoolbook page section. It must
also be accessed by students at MS Teams and other institutionally subscribed video hosting
platform.
e. The synchronous meeting will only be held at the schedule indicated in the registration form.
