1.1 Gospel Reflection

“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my

rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves
me, and my place of safety”
-Psalms 18:2 (New Living Translation)

We all want to stay safe as we face the dangers and uncertainties brought about by
COVID-19 pandemic. Healthwise we practice physical distancing, wear mask and face shield
outside our residence, observe strict personal hygiene, and stay put in our house as much as
possible. However, not everyone has the prudence in practicing these health guidelines. The
prolonged quarantine period is also affecting us negatively in terms of economic, psycho-
social, and socio-political aspects. To whom can we turn for comfort, assurance, and sense of
protection?
As Psalms 18:2 says, the Lord is our rock, fortress, savior, shield, and place of safety.
In these uncertain times there is one certain thing that we can hold on to – God is here to bring
us rest, comfort, and peace even during this perilous time. Cast all your anxieties, fears, and
worries to Him in prayer, meditation, and worship. His love, grace, and provisions will give you
the courage and strength to face life’s challenges. God bless and keep us all safe! © Legaspi, 2020
Reflection Point: In what ways did you personally find comfort and protection through our
Lord?

1.3 Tips for Successful Home-based Learning

The success of your home-based learning (HBL) set-up is hinged on self-discipline and
dedication on your part and sufficient academic support on my end as your subject teacher.
Here are some tips for a successful HBL using the printed modules that are provided to you.
1. Find the most conducive place in your house, dorm, or apartment where you can study
with minimal distractions and disruptions. Ideally it should be well ventilated, with ample
lighting, and with enough space for you to read and write.

2. Be organized and prudent in keeping your modules and learning materials. You will only
be given a single copy of the modules so be careful not to lose or damage them.

3. Prepare yourself physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually before studying.

Have some light snacks and refreshment ready in case you go hungry while studying.
Listening to your favorite “inspiring music” in moderate volume can help stimulate your
mind. Pray and meditate through the Gospel Reflection for spiritual inspiration.

4. Establish a learning schedule and routine. Allot specific time for all the courses that you
are taking this semester. Do not wait to be “in the mood” for learning but rather establish
a habit of motivating yourself to study and learn diligently.

5. Read the lessons carefully and sequentially. Take a small break in between your
studying if you already feel overwhelmed and exhausted. If you are too confused about
certain topics, read through available reference materials at hand and/or seek my help
and guidance through our official communication channels.

6. Take note of key concepts and principles by using a highlighter, underlining the text, or
writing them down on a notebook for your future reference.

7. Read the rubric if any to understand how I will grade your output based on the
established standards or learning outcomes. Make it your guide in formulating your
answers.

8. Answer the assessments on a scratch paper first and then review your answers and
make necessary corrections. Once you are sure of your answers, transfer them on the
official answer sheet in the module which you will be passing to me for grading and
feedback. Keep your scratch papers as personal reference.

9. Be honest in accomplishing your assessments. Do not plagiarize by directly copying

information from any sources word for word. Paraphrase them and make appropriate
attributions to the original source/author. Accomplish the assessments yourself because
they are given for your own learning and academic progress.

1.5 Comparison of Printed with Online Modules

The on-going COVID-19 pandemic has forced the migration of teaching and learning
across all education levels to Distance Learning Mode primarily through various online learning
platforms. DLSU-D has been using the Schoolbook platform for blended learning for several
years already, making the migration to fully online learning a smoother process than most
institutions. However, the University recognizes that not all students have the means to avail of
the fully online learning mode through Schoolbook. As such, a Home-based Learning set-up
using printed modules is being offered to these students as part of the “Care-Centered
Learning Framework”.
Measures were put up to ensure that the content and quality of the printed modules will
be the same as the online modules. However, it is understandable that the technological
features of the online platform cannot be duplicated in the printed modules such as:
 Lessons – the interactive and multimedia-rich features using MS Office suite, video
integration, online gamification, learning path directions, and many others are only
possible through the Schoolbook platform.
 Assessments – the adaptive nature, multiple chances, variety of forms, and
interactive nature of assessments and its real-time grading and feedback mechanism
is not possible in paper-based modules.
 Consultations – students through the Schoolbook platform can communicate with
their subject teacher in a variety of ways such as MS Teams, chat, direct messaging,
and online discussion among others. For printed modules, the means of
communication is limited to text and call.
 Submission of Assessments – online students can submit their assessment
anytime and anywhere within the prescribed period through Schoolbook. For printed
modules, the assessments are sent by courier or in person if allowed under the
quarantine conditions on or before the set deadline.

1.6 Communication Platform

The official communication platform for home-based learning is through text or call to
the personal mobile number of your subject teacher. You are not allowed to share my personal
contact details to anyone else. Text and call should be made during the stipulated day and
time only:
Mobile Number: +639293405872
For consultation thru text message: Mon-Fri, from 0830-1730 H.
For consultation thru phone call: Mon-Fri, from 1430-1730 H with prior permission.

Consultation Protocol: Introduce your name, section, and subject before your specific
concern in a text message. Seek permission to call by sending a text message beforehand.

Take a 15-30 minute break before proceeding to the next section on Laboratory
Safety Orientation and Guidelines. Eat some light snacks if you are feeling hungry
and drink your favorite healthy beverage. Stretch out a bit too as you have been
sitting for quite a long time already. 

1.8 Module Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module you should be able to:
1. Identify the laboratory safety guidelines that should be observed while working in the
laboratory.
2. Explain the importance of observing laboratory safety protocols in conducting laboratory
experiments.

1.9 Laboratory Safety Orientation and Guidelines

A. Laboratory Safety Guidelines

Working in the laboratory exposes you to various hazards which are agents that have
the potential to cause harm. Laboratory safety protocols are established to minimize if not
eliminate your exposure to these hazards. Listed below are the comprehensive safety
protocols that you should strictly observe while working in the laboratory.
1. Know the location and proper use of various laboratory safety devices such as fire
extinguisher, fire blanket, safety shower with eye wash station, and first aid kit.
2. Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited inside the laboratory.
3. Always wear personal protective equipment during experimentation i.e. laboratory
gown, safety googles, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Long hair should be pony
tailed or covered with a hair net.
4. Read and understand the experimental procedures of beforehand.
5. Carry out experimental procedures carefully. Do not perform any unauthorized
experiment.
6. Keep your working area neat and orderly. Do not clutter the laboratory table with
unnecessary items like bags and books.
7. Keep glassware and chemicals away from the edge of the table.

Module 1: Course Introduction and Laboratory Safety Guidelines

8. Know and understand the meaning of standard hazard signs on chemical labels and
observe the necessary safety measures.
9. All toxic, harmful, corrosive, and flammable chemicals should always be kept inside the
fume hood. Do not bring any of them to your laboratory table.
10. Use only the designated spatula, dropper, or pipette for each reagent to avoid cross-
contamination.
11. Always add acid to water and not water to acid to avoid a violent reaction.
12. Never heat flammable chemicals with open flame use water bath instead.
13. Do not touch hot objects with bare hands; use tongs or warm gloves.
14. Do not pick up broken glassware with bare hands. Throw the shards on designated
receptacle.
15. Report all untoward incidents to your laboratory instructor for proper action.
16. In case of chemical spillage on clothing and skin, remove the contaminated clothing and
wash the affected skin area with copious amount of water. Use the eye wash station for
chemical spillage on the eyes. Apply appropriate first aid treatment or bring the victim
to the clinic for treatment.
17. Consult your instructor for the proper clean-up and disposal of spilled chemicals.
18. Throw waste chemicals into their designated waste jar. Throw non-hazardous solid
wastes into the designated waste bin.
19. Clean your entire working area including the sink when you are done with the
experiment. Make sure all glassware are cleaned thoroughly and dried. Return all
borrowed materials, reagents, and equipment to the laboratory stock room.
20. Always wash your hands thoroughly after doing an experiment.

B. Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) are garments and articles that are worn for
protection against various kinds of workplace hazards like physical, chemical, and biological
hazards. Standard PPE in Biomolecules consists of laboratory gown, safety goggles, long
pants, closed-toe shoes, and gloves. A laboratory gown is usually a white cotton buttoned
loose cloth that serves as barrier for your skin and clothing against laboratory hazards.
Remember that your lab gown is not a cape for flying (you are no superman/woman, but you
are one promising scientist in the making) so button down whenever you are wearing it! Safety
googles should have a wrap-around splash guard for better protection against chemical
spillage and projectiles that may damage your beautiful eyes. Long pants are required for
protecting your smooth or hairy legs, so even if you look much better wearing your shorts,
sorry they are not allowed if you are doing an experiment in the laboratory! Closed-toe shoes
are likewise the primary protection for your feet, so sandals are a big no in the laboratory!
Gloves, typically the latex ones, is only required when you are handling acutely toxic
chemicals or potentially infectious biological specimens. Always remember there are multiple
associated hazards when working in the laboratory, so wearing your PPE is for your own
protection though it may not be of stylish fashion!
