1 Preface
1.1 Precautions and safety
Before you handle any cables you must comply with the following safety
advice:
1.1.1 Imminent danger to optical fibre
Laser radiation harmful for eyes

The optical fibre for the CATV emits laser light of a Class 3 laser which may
be harmful for eyes, especially if looked at with focussing equipment (magni-
fying lenses, glasses etc.)
→ Do not look into the optical fibre which carries the CATV signal.
Degrading or breaking of optical fibre with loss of communication link

Excessive bending and ignoring the minimum bending radius of 15 mm dam-
ages optical fibres.
→ Do not bend or press optical fibres.
→ Always keep at least the minimum bending radius.
Danger of damaging optical fibres when using other than MileGate ED

cover for subrack
The ordinary MileGate SD cover is not deep enough to house optical fibres
but excessively bends the optical fibres.
→ Install MileGate ED cover - replace possibly installed MileGate SD
cover.

1.1.2 Safety Advice as equipment is connected to hazardous voltages
Danger of electric shock!

On the electrical interfaces dangerous voltages can occur.
-> Do not touch any live wires or related wire contacts!
-> Before manipulating the power supply switch off the circuit at the switch
or fuse of the circuit.

Hazardous voltages
Cables may be connected to mains.
-> Connect the subrack only to a switchable power supply and switch off
the power supply before installation or deinstallaition of the unit.
Hazardous voltages
In operation a MileGate subracks is supplied with potentially hazardous volt-
ages of more than 220 Volts AC.
-> Connect the housing to earth.
-> Connect the protective earth contact of the housing with the protective
earth of the mains cable.
-> Connect the subracks only to a switchable power supply and switch off
the power supply before manipulating.
Danger of electrostatic discharge
To protect your equipment you must discharge any static charge from
your person before touching the unit or any components.
-> Wear a grounded, anti-ESD wristband when working with the hardware.
1.1.3 Imminent danger to equipment connected to cables
Disruption of data transmission

Switching off the power supply will interrupt data transmission.
-> If possible postpone maintenance to periods with very little traffic.
Damage due to electrostatic discharge
Electrostatic discharges may damage the equipment.
-> Equipment must be connected to the protective earth of the mains ter-
mination.
Damage due to overvoltage
Overvoltages may damage the equipment.
-> Connect the grounding cable for full overvoltage protection.

1.2 About this document
This manual is a reference of electrical cables suitable for MileGate equip-

ment. No optical fibres are mentioned.
This manual serves as an interface between the actual application and
ordering a cable for that application at KEYMILE.
1.2.1 Further sources of information

2 Introduction
This document describes electrical cables for MileGate equipment. Electrical
cables for MileGate are specially tailored to offer the best fit for an apllication
Optical cables are not mentioned in this manual as they are architecture and
functions of units of the type KEYMILE relies on fibres which are available in
the open market.
Unless otherwise specified cables are suitable for subracks of the following
types:
• MileGate 2500
• MileGate 2510
• MileGate 2300
• MileGate 2310.
2.1 Earthing principles
The shields of all electrical cables connected to MileGate equipment must be

earthed to maintain the equipment‚Äôs EMC status.
MileGate equipment cables have a section of their EMC shield exposed for
this purpose.
MileGate subracks have a cable earthing facility to which you must attach
the cables as described in the installation guides
To ensure lightning protection of the interfaces additional external measures
for the installation of cables are required.
For a description of these measures refer to [505].
Most cables have a one-ferrite or two-ferrites EMC-filter, depending on the
signal type and the shielding arrangement for the particular cable connec-
tion.

2.2 Ethernet cables
Electrical cables for MileGate Ethernet interfaces must be earthed like any
other cable for MileGate equipment.
KEYMILE provides category 5e Ethernet cables (see "Ethernet GbE cat5e,
RJ45 plug to RJ45 plug (675.0461.00)" (page 56)). The EMC shield is
already exposed to fit the earthing facilities of MileGate 2500 or MileGate
2510 subracks. The purpose of these cables is the provisioning of proper
Ethernet cable shield grounding for the MileGate Ethernet interface and the
application of these cables is normally limited to the connection of MileGate
equipment to the local Ethernet patch panel or to other local equipment such
as switches etc.
For GbE speeds on electrical category 5e cables the maximum distance
between a MileGate subrack and the terminating Ethernet interface (e.g. in
another MileGate subrack) must not exceed to 100 m.
For longer distances KEYMILE recommends the usage of optical Ethernet
interfaces and optical fibres.
