Quick Tips for Sewing with Vinyl Fabric:

You’ll want to choose a fabric that isn’t very thin, such as some used in clothing. It should be
noticeably heavier than quilting weight cotton but the heavier it is, the harder it will be to work
with. Use your best judgement when choosing a contrasting fabric.
Vinyl is a bit different to sew than woven fabric. Use a longer stitch length and sharp needle, as
the stitching perforates both types of fabric and can weaken it at the seams.
For top stitching, you’ll need a non-stick (teflon) foot, roller foot, or walking foot. Back stitch
minimally, being careful to stay on the same line of stitching.
You cannot press vinyl from the right side, but you can usually press it from the wrong side at a
lower heat setting. If you have a pressing cloth, use it. Also, test a small scrap to see how it
handles the heat. Alternatively, you can often use fabric glue to secure instead of pressing.
Lastly, you’ll want to avoid pinning since pins will leave permanent holes. Try fabric clips, fabric
glue or double-sided tape instead.

1) PREPPING
Print the pattern at “Actual size” or “100% scale”. Cut out all paper pattern pieces along the solid
black lines. On the wrong side of the fabric, trace and cut the pieces from the exterior fabric,
contrasting fabric and lining fabric, as instructed on each pattern piece. Your contrasting fabric
will either be a woven fabric or vinyl fabric; use only the corresponding Snap Tab and Accent
Panel pattern pieces. Cut on the fold of the fabric where noted. Repeat to cut woven interfacing
and fleece interfacing.

Additionally, measure and cut: (width x height)

Woven Shoulder Strap • 27” x 3”, Cut 2 Contrasting, Cut 2 Woven Interfacing
Vinyl Shoulder Strap • 52” x 3”, Cut 1 Vinyl
Strap Connectors • 1.5” x 5”, Cut 1 Contrasting, Cut 1 Woven Interfacing (none if using vinyl)

Fuse woven interfacing to the wrong side of all lining panels, contrasting Woven Snap Tab
pieces (if applicable), both Pocket Panels, the contrasting Flap Panel (unless vinyl), Woven
Shoulder Straps (if applicable) and Strap Connectors (unless vinyl).

Fuse fleece interfacing to the exterior Main Panel and contrasting Gusset Panel(s). Fuse fleece
interfacing to the wrong side of the Bottom Back Panel, matching the bottom edge of the fleece
to the bottom edge of the fabric. Fuse fleece interfacing to the Top Back Panel, matching the top
edge of the fleece to the top edge of the fabric. Fuse the Flap Fleece to the wrong side of the
contrasting Flap Panel, centered from all edges.

If using woven contrasting fabric, center the Woven Snap Tab stabilizer on the wrong side of one
contrasting Woven Snap Tab, with the short ends matching, and fuse in place.

2) WOVEN ACCENT PANEL

(skip to 3 if using vinyl)
Pin the two Woven Accent Panels right
sides together and matching all edges.
Sew along the inside edge only at 1/4”
seam allowance.

Clip into the seam allowance a few times

along the curves, right up to the stitching.
Flip right side out and press the seam well.

3) EXTERIOR MAIN PANEL

Pin or glue baste the Accent Panel to the right side of the exterior Main Panel, matching the
bottom raw edge of the Accent Panel to the bottom edge of the Main Panel. Top stitch along the
top edge, about 1/8” from the edge, then pivot to machine baste along the bottom edge at 1/8”
seam allowance.

Use the Main Panel paper pattern piece or measure to mark the magnetic snap placement on the
right side of the exterior Main Panel. It should be 3.5” down from the top edge and centered.
Install the female part of the magnetic snap, centered over the mark.

4) FLAP
Pin the contrasting Flap Panel and lining
Flap Panel right sides together and matching
all raw edges. Starting at the straight edge,
sew around the “U” of the Flap only at 1/4”
seam allowance.

Clip into the seam allowance a few times

along the curves. Turn the Flap right side out.

Top stitch around the Flap, about 1/8” from

the finished edge, then pivot to machine
baste the top raw edge closed.

Set the Flap aside for now.

5) SNAP TAB
Use the Woven or Vinyl Snap Tab pattern piece or measure to mark the magnetic snap placement
on the right side of a Vinyl Snap Tab or the Woven Snap Tab with stabilizer. It should be 6.25”
down from the top straight edge and centered. Install the male part of the magnetic snap centered
over the mark.

5A) WOVEN SNAP TAB (skip to 5B if using vinyl)

Pin the two Woven Snap Tabs right sides together and matching all raw edges. Starting at the top
end, sew along the long edge; right next to, but not through, the stabilizer. When you reach the
bottom point, pivot to sew along the other long edge. Stop and back stitch right where the edge
begins to straighten.

Trim the seam allowance down to about 1/8”, only along the stitching. Turn the Snap Tab right
side out. Tuck the raw long edges inside and around the stabilizer. Press well.

5B) VINYL SNAP TAB (skip to 5C if using woven)

Glue baste the two Vinyl Snap Tabs wrong sides together and matching all edges. Let the glue
set, then carefully trim the edges to match.

5C) ATTACH SNAP TAB

Measure to mark a vertical center line on the
contrasting side of the Flap. Apply a thin
amount of fabric glue over the line, then lay
the assembled Snap Tab, snap side down,
centered over the line (or pin the Snap Tab in
place). Match the top straight end of the
Snap Tab to the top straight edge of the
Flap.

Starting at the top matched edge, top stitch

along the edge of the Snap Tab, about 1/8”
from the edge. Sew down to the bottom
point of the Snap Tab and stop. Start at the
top edge again to sew along the other long
edge of the Snap Tab, stopping at the
bottom point.

6) EXTERIOR BACK PANEL

Pin the Flap, contrasting side down, to the right side of
the Bottom Back Panel, matching the top raw edge of
the Flap to the top straight edge of the Back Bottom
Panel. Center the Flap. Machine baste along the
matched edge only at 1/8” seam allowance.

Pin the Top Back Panel to

the Bottom Pack Panel, right
sides together and matching
the bottom edge of the Top
Back Panel to the top edge
of the Bottom Back Panel.
The Flap will be sandwiched
in between. Sew along the
matched edge only at 1/4”
seam allowance.

Flip the Flap up, so that all panels are right side up and
press well. Press the seam allowances towards the
Bottom. Top stitch along the seam, through the
Bottom Back Panel and seam allowance, about 1/8”
from the seam.

Pin the exterior Pocket Panel to the lining

Pocket Panel, right sides together and
matching all raw edges. Sew along the top
straight edge only at 1/4” seam allowance.

Flip open and press the seam. Pin the

Pocket Panels wrong sides together and
matching all raw edges. Top stitch along
the top finished seam, about 1/8” from the
edge, then continue to machine baste
along the remaining raw edges at 1/8”
seam allowance.

Pin the Pocket Panel, lining side down, onto the

exterior Back Panel with Flap, matching the raw edges.
The top of the pocket will cover the seam.

Machine baste the Pocket Panel in place, at 1/8” seam

allowance, along only the matched raw edges. Do not
sew through the Flap.

The exterior Back Panel is finished, set aside for now.

7) GUSSET
(skip to next page if you cut the Gusset Panels on the fold)
Pin the two contrasting Gusset Panels right sides together and matching all edges. Sew along the
bottom straight edge only at 1/4” seam allowance.

Press the seam allowance to one side and

top stitch along the seam, through the
Gusset Panel and seam allowance.

Repeat to sew the two lining Gusset

Panels together, then top stitch.

7
7

On the wrong side, mark a center line that is 3/4” in from each long
edge of the Strap Connectors panel. Fold each long edge to the center
line and press (glue baste if using vinyl).

Fold the Strap Connector in half, matching the short ends, and cut in half at the fold. The
Connectors should now be 3/4” wide and 2.5” long. Fold each end of a Connector to the middle,
so that they butt together in the center with long edges hidden inside, and press.

Slide a D-ring into one of the folds and pin or glue baste the raw ends in place.
Repeat for the remaining Strap Connector.

Use the Gusset Panel paper pattern piece or measure to mark the Strap Connector placement at
both ends of the contrasting Gusset, on the right side. The short edge of the Connector with
hardware should be 1.25” from each short straight edge and centered. Pin or glue baste the
Connectors in place, with the D-rings facing towards the short edges. Using a zipper foot, top
stitch across a Connector along the hardware, then pivot to sew along the remaining edges, about
1/8” from the edges. Back stitch at start and stop. Repeat to sew the remaining Connector in
place.

8) ASSEMBLY
Fold the exterior Main Panel in half, wrong sides together and matching all raw edges and mark
the center along the bottom edge. Repeat to mark the center along the bottom edge of the
Exterior Back Panel (with flap).

8
8

Matching the Gusset seam to the center mark, lay

the exterior Gusset right side down on the exterior
Main Panel, right side up. Pin once at the center
mark.

Fold the Gusset in half to find and mark

the center, if you cut it on the fold.

Pin the end of the Gusset to the top corner of the

exterior Main Panel, matching raw edges. Pin
the other end of the Gusset to the other top
corner. Now starting at either top corner, pin
downward every 1” or so, until you reach the
bottom center pin. Repeat to pin the other side.
With the wrong side of the Main Panel up, sew
along the matched edges only at 1/4” seam
allowance.

Fold the seam allowance towards the Gusset.

Carefully top stitch along the seam, about 1/8” from
the seam, through the Gusset and seam allowance.
This will smooth out the seam.

Repeat to sew the exterior Back Panel (with flap) to

the other long edge of the exterior Gusset. Be careful
not to sew through the Flap. Trim the seam
allowances down to about 1/8”, do not top stitch.

Repeat again to sew the two lining Main Panels to

the lining Gusset. Start at a 1/4” seam allowance at
the top and gradually increase to sew at a 3/8”
seam allowance along the bottom. Leave about 4”
unsewn along one side edge of a lining Main Panel
to turn the bag later.

Trim seam allowances only along the stitching.

9
9

With the lining wrong side out, and the exterior right side out, place the exterior inside the lining.
The lining and exterior should be right sides together. Tuck the Flap and Connectors down
between the layers. Matching up the side seams and raw edges, pin around the top raw edges of
the bag. Sew at 1/4” seam allowance along the entire opening.

Trim the seam allowance down to about 1/8”. Pull the bag right side out through the opening in the
lining. Fold the raw edges into the opening and press, then pin closed. Top stitch as closely to the
edge as you can to close the opening.

Tuck the lining inside the bag and press the entire bag well, especially along the top opening. Take
care to keep the iron away from any vinyl. Top stitch along the top seam around the opening of the
bag, about 1/4” from the edge.

9) ADJUSTABLE STRAP
If using woven: Pin the two Strap panels right sides together and matching all edges. Sew along
only one short edge at 1/4” seam allowance. Press the seam allowance open.

For both vinyl and woven: On the wrong side of the Strap panel, mark a center line that is 1.5” in
from, and parallel to, each long edge. Then, fold each long edge to the center line and press, glue
baste or use double-sided tape to hold in place.

Fold in half one more time and press (or glue baste). The long raw edges should be hidden inside
and the Strap panel should be 3/4” wide. Top stitch along each long edge, about 1/8” from the
edge.

Fold both ends of the Strap under 1/2”, then again 3/4“ and
press (skip for vinyl). Pull one end of the Strap over the center
bar of the strap slide; up from the bottom of the slide, over the
bar, and back through the other opening. Situate so the center
bar is in the 3/4” fold of the Strap (for vinyl, just fold over the
bar 1”). Sew across the Strap, along the fold to attach the end
of the Strap to the bar.

Slide a swivel clip onto the Strap and move it to the end,
near the slide. Pull the raw end of the Strap up and over the
center bar in the opposite direction.

Slide the remaining swivel clip into the 3/4” fold at the other end of the Strap, and sew across to
secure. Clip the Strap onto the D-rings and your Dollie Mini Crossbody is all finished!
