Belcena Work Immersion

Work Immersion as one of the Salient Pictures of K-12 Curriculum

Introduction:
In accordance to the Republic Act No. 10533, it talks about the enhancement of Basic
Education System by strengthening its curriculum, and increasing the number of years for basic
education. It simply states the relevance of the K-12 in the Education system of the Philippines
by adding two more years, it is expected to further train students to enhance their knowledge and
skills that would be advantageous to them in the future especially when they start working and as
well as for those who choose not to continue going to college it would be an option for them to
not continue their college for job opportunities are vast even for them.
Philippines is actually the last country to ever used the 10 year education cycle and last to
implement the K-12 Curriculum. It is a beneficial move not only to the Filipino students but as
well as to the whole Philippines. The implementation of K-12 made Philippines internationally
on par when it comes to academics with their students, therefore, in the future countries would
let Filipino to work abroad because for the past years it has been hard to work abroad for
Filipinos because when it comes to educational attainment Filipinos lack two more years of
educational years which is standardized already on majority of nations which require some
Filipino applicants to study two more years in order to be accepted in their work.
In the Philippines the addition of Senior High School is significant as it trains student to
be able to compete in the global context. Along with the addition of K-12 Curriculum in the
Philippine’s educational system, it is teemed with the work immersion, a program where students
immerse in a working environment thus honing their skills and knowledge when it comes to a
real life job setting. In comparison to the latter years, fresh college graduates usually miserably
fail in their work during their first years due to lack of exposure to the real job setting and it
creates a shock to them to work without the experience beforehand or a limited experience to
acclimate to the working environment. Work immersion is just one of the many platforms
created to truly prepare students to be a part of the working industry even though in college OJTs
are a different story since some students will choose to work after their Senior High School. As
early as possible I believe that through this program, it helps students not just to be prepared in
the near future but as well as helps them to develop the right attitude of a worker as it practices
them to respond to situations that are commonly encountered in the work. Experience helps
create efficient workers which work immersion and the program alike helps bridge the gap of
inexperience to some students thus making them better.
Rationale:
The work immersion opens up a lot of doors to Senior High School students as it helps
them with the following:
1. become familiar with the working environment
2. prepare themselves for employment as they get to interact with people as a worker
3. it enables them to apply their area of specialized knowledge in a real job setting.
4.
To attain these objectives it demands the need to immerse themselves in a working
environment such as City Halls, Hospitals, and other venues where students can train themselves
to work and serves as a requirement prior to their graduation exercises.
The structure of work immersion has been formulated based on the experiences of the
previous leading schools in order for this program to work efficiently. These guidelines can
provide process support to field offices of the Department of Education in building relationships
and strengthening partnerships in order for students to grant students access to appropriate
working environment venues and other related sources.

Scope:
The guidelines that applies to Senior High School students includes the following:
1. DepEd Senior High Schools
2. Private Senior High Schools
3. State Colleges Senior High Schools
4. Local University and Colleges
5. Technical-Vocational Institutions.

Objectives:
Work immersions helps students develop the skills necessary for their college and for
their future careers, it helps prepare them to make smart decisions in their college years or in
their professional works in the future. Through the venues provided in partnership with the
institution conducting work immersions programs the DepEd hopes to grant learners with vast of
work immersion opportunities, real job setting experiences, and more educational references.
Work immersion’s aims for Senior High School students are the following:
1. to practice and develop ways to make use of the knowledge they acquired in academics in
a workplace
2. enhance technicality of their skills and knowledge
3. boost their interpersonal skills and acquire work ethics.
Senior High Schools students are expected to apply all of the things they have learned in
the school in a non-school setting it will serve as venue for them to experience social interactions
in a working environment. The work immersion will leave students with the skills and attitudes
necessary when working as they step into the ladder of adulthood which is the real world. As
they exit the Senior High School and enter College they would be ready to face it because all
skills and competencies have been developed already through the work immersion.
To ensure that the goals for the students are achieved, this policy serves as a guide to
schools in:
1. creating versatile work immersion plan and arrangements for their students
2. provide vast options for students for work immersion that are relevant and in
accordance to their college courses
3. organization of opportunities for learners that are consistent with the diverse human
resource requirements of partner institutions for work immersion
4. articulating the scope and limits of work immersion in the context of basic education
when building relationships with work immersion partners.

Reflection:
Initially, I thought work immersion is just a venue where we can act like we are workers
in order to live a few days as a worker but it didn’t feel that way, instead it felt like it is the real
thing. It felt like working already and that made the experience a whole lot better because you
really get to be in the shoes of a worker which is a completely different world. I have had a lot of
realizations during the work immersion, realizations that changed my perspective and thinking
regarding my profession. I know the work immersion experience is still far from the real thing,
for a moment it made me doubt the course that I firmly going to take in college because I
realized that when you start working there is no backing down, well you can turn back but it is
not ideal because you will waste years of college, that is why I really thought hard about my
current decision if I will be committed to it in the future, if I am really passionate about it
because in the end what keeps us going is love for something, that is what makes us driven and
the lack of love is every one’s downfall because it leads to hopelessness and eventually failure
and no one wants that. Every success that I have seen for my entire life is rooted to love and
passion, it serves as a momentum to reach greater heights in life, that is what the essential thing I
realized during the work immersion.
