1. Consider a system of two Continuous stirred tank reactors in series, where the following endothermic
reaction takes place:

A  catalyst 
 B

a. Identify the control objectives for the operation of the two CSTRs.
b. Classify the variables of the system into inputs and outputs and subsequently classify the
inputs into disturbances and manipulated variables and the outputs into measured and
unmeasured outputs. Is this a SISO or a MIMO system?
c. Develop a feedback control configuration that satisfies your objectives using a composition
analyzer at the exit stream of the second CSTR.
d. Develop a feedforward control configuration that can also use composition analyzer if they
are needed.
e. In your opinion, which system is easier to control, the two-CSTR system shown in Figure or
an equivalent one-CSTR system that achieves the same convertion? Explain qualitatively
why.

2. The liquid storage tank shown in Fig. has two inlet streams with mass flow rates w1 and w2 and an
exit stream with flow rate w3. The cylindrical tank is 2.5 m tall and 2 m in diameter. The liquid has a
density of 800 kg/m3. Normal operating procedure is to fill the tank until the liquid level reaches a
nominal value of 1.75 m using constant flow rates: w1 = 120 kg/min and w2 = 100 kg/min. At that
point, inlet flow rate w1 is adjusted so that the level remains constant. However, on this particular

day, corrosion of the tank has opened up a hole in the wall at a height of 1 m, producing a leak
whose volumetric flow rate q4 (m3/min) can be approximated by:

q4  0.025 h  1

And:

w3  0.03 h

Where h is height in meters.

a. Identify the control objectives for this system.

b. Develop a mathematical model.

3. Resuelva el modelo matemático del problema 2, bajo las siguientes condiciones:

 h 0   1.75 m
