Anuvāka 1
स्वरा॑ श्च म॒ श्लोका॑श्च म श्न॒िश्चा॑ म॒
In this first anuvāka, the powers to be manifested in the sacrificer are the physical, vital 5
and mental powers, primarily those associated with prāṇa or life energy. These powers are
needed for successful completion of the many types of work encountered in everyday life. svara ca e loka ca e rāva ca e
They include will-power, effort, the powers of breath like prāṇa, apāna, vyāna, well-
speech, fame, renown,
developed body with healthy limbs, bones, joints, etc. The prayer is that all these powers be
perfectly manifested in us in complete harmony with each other.

Anuvāka 2
द्रनघ॒ यु न ा॑ म ि॒ द्ध ा॑ म॒ िवद्धा॑ श्च म
This anuvāka lists the goals that are to be attained with the powers requested in the earlier 5
anuvāka. The goals deal with those achievable primarily by the prāṇa energy. The goals
include pre-eminence, enjoyment of the play in life, all-sided progress, wealth, choice of drāghu ā ca e v ddhaṁ ca e v ddhi ca e
auspicious paths in life, etc. Even though the list mentions thought and right thinking,
length, growth, growing,
these are aspects under the sway of prāṇa and not the things under the control of mind.

Anuvāka 3
र्वता॑श्च म॒ विश् ा॑ म॒
Here are listed the goals to be attained primarily by the use of mental powers. The prayer 5
is, 'may these goals in their perfection be attained through the yajña’. The list includes
teaching, discovery, eagerness for knowledge and Truth, immortality, understanding the dh ti ca e vi vaṁ ca e
rhythms in life, quest for immortality, freedom from diseases understanding the available
fortitude, all (noble) qualities,
paths in life and the choice of the right path. It includes the ability to sleep well, a power
associated both with mind and prāṇa.

This anuvāka describes the powers or qualities which nourish both our gross and subtle 4
bodies. It clearly includes abounding force, pleasant and true words, mental clarities,

This section mentions the names of varieties of grains such as rice, barley, wheat, lentils,
felicities, riches, growth, nourishment,
wild rice, kidney beans, sesame, etc. Because of the oneness of nature and the humankind,
each type of grain, pea or seed, represents a force which is needed in our body. They are
endowed with attractive tastes so that our mouths accept them easily. The prayer is that the 5

Each God like Agni or Indra is a cosmic power whiqh can endow our bodies with specific 5
psychological powers. For instance, Agni is the power of will, Indra is the lord of the divine
mind including its many aspects; Savitṛ or Sun is the supreme creator; Bṛhaspati itra ca a indra ca e varuṇa ca a
represents vastness, etc. The prayer is that may all these Gods come in and grow in us
Mitra, Indra, Varuṇa,
perfectly manifesting their powers just as a child grows in a mother's womb.

In the inner yajña, each, word like amśu, raśmi represents an aspect of self-offering to the 4
मैत्निरु॒ णश्चा॑ म आवश्॒ नश्चा॑ म
respective deity i.e., each epithet represents an aspect of the cosmic power which accepts the
Soma of Delight; the Soma is being shared by all the deities; this sharing symbolically aitrāvaruṇa ca a ā vina ca e
represents the harmony among the different powers and the harmony of their manifestation
(power of) Mitra and Varuṅa, Ashvins,
in our bodies. The epithets include the name of God like Maruts or the phrase marutvata,
power belonging to the Gods Maruts. The epithets include the powers themselves without
symbolism such as effulgence, the light within (upāmṣu), inner controller (antaryāma). In 5

Anuvāka 8
By yajña is meant both the one happening in our subtle body and the external or outer 4
अवर्॒ षिा॑ ण म द्रोणकल॒ शश्चा॑ म
yajña involving the physical fire, ghee etc. Each accompaniment in the external yajña has a
correspondence in the internal yajña with its associated power; the prayer here is for the adhiṣavaṇe ca me droṇakala a ca me
manifestation of those powers in us. For instance the first one in the list here is idhma, the
the two platters (heaven and earth), the pot for storing Soma (body),
fuel. In the external yajña, it is the kindling sticks. The prayer, 'may yajña make these
sticks perfect or available in plenty' is trite. But the fuel here is our inner force which
drives all our external works. Clearly only the inner yajña can make this force perfect or 5

Anuvāka 9
This anuvāka mentions the powers of Light and sound which are closely connected. It 4
शक्वा॑र र॒ङ्ल
ु ा॑ यो॒ वदशा॑श्च म य॒ ज्ञना॑ कल्पन्तन॒म
begins with Agni who is intimately associated with the potent word (Vāk), then comes his
blaze which spreads the Agni power; next comes the ṛk mantra, the mantra of illumination; akvarīraṅgula o di a ca e a ena kalpantā
then comes Sūrya, the highest light which he gives to all seekers etc. It includes Prāṇa,
the space (diśa) of skilful (aṅguli) and harmonious metres (śakvarī), may all these powers
Aśvamedha etc., because these powers are intimately associated with the mantra. Of course,
develop in me.
the list includes the yajus mantra, the stoma chants (a particular way of chanting Sāma
mantrās), some specific types of Sāma chants like the Bṛhat and Rathantara. It mentions
also the power of askesis (tapas) and the initiation or consecration (dīkṣā) which is the 5

This anuvāka has been divided (by Dr. R.L. Kashyap) into two parts, part (i) and part (ii). 3
पञ्ना॑विश्च म पञ्न॒ि ा॑ म
For the ritualist, the part (i) consists of a list of animals mainly calves, male and female, of
various ages such as one and a half year, two year, two and a half year etc. The list ends pa cāvi ca e pa cāvī ca e
with the barren cow, the cow that miscarries etc., whose presence seems strange in this
(power of) two and a half years old male and female,
anuvāka entitled ‘vasordhāra’, ‘shower of felicities’. Viewed symbolically, each entry
represents a type of human being at a certain stage of development indicated by age.
Similarly barrenness or miscarriage represents lack of harmony. The prayer is, ‘may all 4

these human beings be filled with appropriate powers needed for their development and

The second part (which starts from line 9 below) is more interesting. It specifically
mentions the prayer for perfection of our principal prāṇa energies, our senses, mind and the
soul also. The ṛṣi here recognizes that even though the soul is perfect, it is covered by 5

impurities of our thoughts etc. Here clearly there is an allusion to the theory of adhyāsa
(superposition) developed by Āchārya Śankara in great detail. Finally it declares, ‘may
