2. This is a work in progress!I realize there are somethings that still need
explaining. There’s no shame in building knowledge from the ground up, but that
takes lots of time and research. My hope is to make our current political
context a little easier to understand :-)
3. I encourage you to do your own research! It’s important to be independent and
informed; there’s no better way to protect your autonomy.
4. IMPORTANT: Please look into the senatorial candidates and figure out who is
deserving of your vote — and I urge you to ONLY vote for them. A

All Candidates Are Against:
● Death Penalty
○ The death penalty is “unnecessary, anti-poor, and error-prone”
○ Crime rates have fallen without d
eath penalty
○ With a record number of executions in 1999, no drop in index crimes was observed
■ Index crimes: occur with sufficient regularity and have socioeconomic
significance

crime

● TRAIN law
○ This law imposed higher excise taxes on automobiles, petroleum products, tobacco,
sugar-sweetened beverages, and other non-essential goods. From what I understand,
the increase in petroleum prices ultimately resulted in the increase in prices of goods and
services.
○ The income tax proposal translates into a higher burden for low-income earners in the
informal sector. The bill is biased towards the richest Filipino tax payers, and functions at
the expense of the marginal income earners.
● Oplan Tokhang (EJKs)
● Federalism
○ type of government wherein sovereignty is constitutionally divided between the national
government and subdivisional governments (such as states or provinces)
■ “Critics contend that the move is part of a plot to revise the constitution and
extend the president’s term in office.”
■ “only a few regions are capable of raising enough taxes on their own”
■ “the richer states of the north will have even more resources to enhance their
competitiveness, thus deepening the developmental gap with other southern
regions”
■ “a federal system could further strengthen the power of political dynasties and
warlords, which control the Philippines’ peripheries.”

Quotes/Extra Info
● “President Duterte is a ferocious dictator whose intolerance for dissent is legendary. We need to
unite”
● “ We deliver the blows to the tyrannical policies of President Duterte. Whether we deliver it as
one coalition, whether we deliver it separately, for me it doesn’t really matter, o
kay na rin kami na
nagkaisa kami ( we’re fine with it as long as we are one in this cause).”
● The one issue he can champion that will diminish people’s support for Duterte: “Economics.
Naghirap ang buhay natin (the quality of life has worsened), I’ll deliver that message. Whether
you are pro-Duterte or against Duterte, the fact is l umala ang buhay ’nyo dahil sa Train (the
quality of your life worsened because of Train).”
● Every politician can now say I’m against Train, I’m actually for workers, I’m actually for higher
wages – [a campaign] platform is actually very easy to compose – but what would differentiate
me from others? Track record.

Quotes/Extra Info
○ Translation: This time, maybe because we have gone far, maybe it's time to share the
blessings with laborers. If I were to craft a bill that would ban contractualization, it won't
be half-baked because I come from the workforce.
○ Translation: “I know the laborer’s woes, I see the solution.”
tao. Siyempre, mangyari ulit dukotan, arestohan, hanggang pagpatay ”
○ Translation: My fears have returned, the sense of dread I felt, during the Marcos regime,
because what occurred before is happening again. The killings are back, the lack of
respect for human rights, and of course the abductions, arrests, and killings.
○ Translation: “I dream of a country where the people are happy, where no tears are shed
because there’s nothing to eat, where faces don’t grimace/fall because they’ve been
turned away by hospitals. I want higher pay, especially for provincial workers – a salary
at par with Metro Manila. I want regular jobs to meet their daily needs. What I want for
our country is equal rights for all, and justice for all. That’s my dream. That’s why i
continue to fight.”
