PROJECT TITLE / NAME:

WASTE TO ENERGY: INVESTING OF PYROLYSIS PLANT IN

DUMAGUETE CITY

INTRODUCTION

Environmental pollution today is mostly caused by the day-to-day accumulation of plastic

waste in the environment. Products found in grocery stores are mostly packaged with plastics. There
are 9.2 billion tons of plastics awkward in on our earth today revise, and most of it exists as wastes
which collect in our ocean where they break down into tiny substances and most times do not
biograde. These tiny particles when ingested by our aquatic animals are very harmful and put our
aquatic life at risk. This became a recurring problem worldwide; even our local dump sites are
overloaded with plastic waste and in turn, endangering the health of neighbouring communities in
the area.

Pyrolysis is way of decomposing such solid, liquid wastes that takes place at high
temperature, but without oxygen or in an atmosphere of inert gases. This means the process requires
lower temperatures, and has lower emissions of some of the air pollutants associated with
combustion.

ECO-Tech also explains how it works:

"Pyrolysis is a fairly simple process, it starts by drying plastics to be processed. They are
then shredded into smaller pieces, and heated in a thermal chamber. The melted plastic
is continually heated until it boils and produce vapors. The vapor is passed into cooling
pipes and distilled into a liquid, which is chemically identical to regular fuel."

Purpose

The city government of Dumaguete is implementing a Zero Waste Cities Project

Dumaguete headed by Merci Ferrer, are making a barangay level waste management systems in
the city, and for proper waste segregation at the source which is the essence of RA-9003 or the
Ecological Solid Waste Management Act. They marginalized that bringing down waste
management to the barangay level was the best approach to address the garbage problem in the
city. Yet, some of the citizens who lives near at the dumpsite in Brgy. Candau-ay are
complaining about the foul smell of the dumpsite which can cause a health problem to the
people.

According to a study done by Zero Waste Cities Project in selected cities all around the
country, they found out that 61.26 percent of the total waste generated by households are
biodegradable, while 19. 17 percent are non-biodegradable, 16.12 percent are residual, and 3.44
percent are special or hazardous wastes.

With the help of having a pyrolysis plant here in Dumaguete City Landfill, this
equipment is worth the cost since the rapid increase of waste pollution is one of the inevitable
issues in our society and has become unstoppable. The final product made by the continuous
pyrolysis plant are really beneficial to us. According to the Henan Mingjie Environmental
Equipment Co., Ltd, the oil made by pyrolysis can be used as an heavy oil generator to get
electricity, some of it can be used back to pyrolysis machine for heating the reactor. It can be
sold directly, widely used in ceramic factory, cement factory, steel factory, hotels, etc. Can be
refined to be non-standard diesel, can be used in the diesel generator, boat, and other heavy
duty low speed diesel engines and it will be recycled to the furnace for heating the reactor. In
terms of carbon black, it can be used as fuel, rubber pads, rubber belt, soles, It can be further
reprocessed to be higher quality, and used as fortifier and filler of plastic and rubber industry or
as color master batch. In terms of Steel Wires ( from waste tires), it can be sold directly to steel
factory and in terms of Combustible gas, it Will be recycled to the furnace for heating the
reactor.

The things we know about this project are the following:

- The market supplier and the budget cost on the pyrolysis plant itself.

-It is really a good investment to our city and to our environment.

-The applicable materials needed in the pyrolysis process.

-Profit analysis of this equipment.

The things we don’t know about this project are the following:

-On how to coordinate properly and present this good investment to the city government of
Dumaguete especially in the Environmental Sector.

- Exact cost of this equipment

Project Approach
Our approach to this project is to engage and encourage the city officials of Dumaguete
City in buying and investing this pyrolysis plant equipment to achieve the goal of minimizing
the percentage of waste in city of Dumaguete by converting such waste into energy. The
pyrolysis plant equipment will cost more than a million. The applicable materials that will be
converted into energy and some beneficial products are waste tires, waste plastics, oil sudge,
medical waste, aluminized paper, waste cable wires. These materials are present and abundant
in the Dumaguete Dumpsite. The city officials of Dumaguete must coordinate to their City
Engineers to play their part in operating the pyrolysis plant equipment, the maintenance of the
equipment and also they will coordinate to their Environmental Officer by strictly organizing
the proper waste segregation, the environmental officer must be keen enough on the applicable
materials to be used of the pyrolysis plant equipment.

Typical Output of Pyrolysis Plant

These are the percentage output made by the pyrolysis plant equipment.

On the other hand, the Henan Mingjie Environmental Equipment Co., Ltd made a profit
analysis in investing this pyrolysis plant. It is not just a profit for the betterment of our environment,
our waste reduction but also a profit that can be gain by city government of Dumaguete
