Chapter 1
Recently, glass fiber filters1 have been put on the market for
use as a filtering medium. A 2.1-cm disk fits most standard
Gooch crucibles. To prepare the crucible, place the fiber disk
in the crucible, cover with a Gooch perforated-porcelain disk,
wash with water, and dry at 1050C to constant weight as in the
case of the asbestos mat filter.

It is possible to titrate boric acid with a fair degree of accuracy by
first adding the soluble polyhydric alcohol (such as glycerol or
mannitol) to the solution. A complex acid is formed which is stronger
than boric acid and gives an inflection in the phenolphthale range.

THE BREAKTHROUGH
This is effective for all refectories, but very dangerous
explosions can occur if it is improperly performed. The fusion
is carried out in a covered nickel crucible nearly submerged in
running cold water.4
