On April 27, 1521, the Portuguese
navigator and warrior named
Ferdinand Magellan were defeated by
a native warrior chief named Lapu-
Lapu. That was the recorded incident
in which Kali was used against foreign
invaders.
In 1873 the fighting system was
renamed "Arnis" derived from Arnes's
word, which means colorful trapping
on the Moro-Moro plays' defensive
armors.
Some of the Philippine revolution
heroes were also practitioners of Arnis,
namely; Andres Bonifacio, the spouses
Diego and Gabriela Silang, and the young Gen. Gregorio Del Pilar. The National Hero Jose Rizal
has also reported to practice the fighting system and the founder of Aglipayan Church, Rev.
Gregorio Aglipay.
Major Favian Ver, also a noted enthusiast and practitioners of Arnis, formed the National Arnis
Association of the Philippines (NARAPHIL) intending to unite all Arnis group in the Philippines.
In July of 1986 Arnis Philippines (ARPHI) was established with the same objective as
NARAPHIL.

ARNIS
W hat is Arnis?
ARNIS is the system of Filipino martial arts founded by the late Remy Presas as a self-defense
system. His goal was to create an injury-free training method and an effective self-defense
system to preserve the older Arnis systems.
Arnis is a Filipino martial art that can be performed individually or with a partner using a single
stick or a pair of posts for striking and blocking; it can also be used for self-defense.
On December 11, 2009, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo declared Arnis as a
Philippine National sport and should be included in Physical Education course and included
among the priority sports in Palarong Pambansa through Republic Act. No. 9850.
