Animals start storing up a food supply to last the long winter months. The farmers also

Section I: Comprehension Open-ended (5 x 2 marks)
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Dinosaurs are animals that evolved into many shapes and sizes. Mention the word
‘dinosaur’ and often you will have one person think of it as an animals like a long-necked
Sauropod, while another person will think of it as a large, fierce meat-eater like
Tyrannosaurus Rex. It should be clear then that the term "dinosaurs", or the scientific
version "Dinosauria", describes a diverse group of animals with widely different modes of
living. The term was invented by Sir Richard Owen in 1842 to describe those "fearfully
great reptiles", specifically Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus, the only three
dinosaurs known at the time. The creatures that we normally think of as dinosaurs lived
from late in the Triassic period (about 225 million years ago) until the end of the Mesozoic
era (about 65 million years ago); but actually they live on today as birds.

48. What are dinosaurs?

49. Where does the term “Dinosauria” come from?

50. Which living animal is closely related to a dinosaur?

8
51. How long ago did dinosaurs exist?

52. What has become of the dinosaurs now? Do they still exist?

Section F: Comprehension MCQ (5 marks)

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

A fairy tale is a fictional story that may feature folkloric characters such as fairies,
goblins, elves, trolls, giants, and usually magic. In modern days, a "fairy tale" or "fairy
story" can also mean any far-fetched or unreal story. Fairy tales commonly attract young
children since they easily understand the magical characters in the story.
The older fairy tales were intended for an audience of adults as well as children, but
they were associated with children as early as the writings of the Brothers Grimm who
titled their collection Children's and Household Tales, and the link with children has only
grown stronger with time.
The oral tradition of the fairy tale came long before the written page. Tales were told
or enacted dramatically, rather than written down, and handed down from generation to
generation. Because of this, the history of their development is not known for sure. The
oldest known written fairy tales stem from ancient Egypt, c. 1300 BC and later in China,
India and Greece.

14
30. A fairy tale is:
(1) A story that was told a long time ago
(2) A story about a fairy

(4) They were also meant for adults
( )

32. These days people think fairy tales are:

(1) Very boring
(2) Mostly unreal
(3) Only suitable for adults
(4) Very authentic stories from long ago
( )

33. Why is the history of fairy tales not known for certain?
(1) They are fictional stories and have no history
(2) Because they are usually meant for children
(3) Because people did not write them down
(4) Because the old storybooks were all destroyed
( )

34. Where does the first fairy tale come from?

(1) Egypt
(2) India
(3) Greece
(4) China
( )

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Some animals "hibernate" for part or all of the winter. This is a special and very deep
sleep. The animal's body temperature drops, and its heartbeat and breathing slow down.
As a result, it uses very little energy. In the fall, these animals get ready for winter by
eating extra food and storing it as body fat. They use this fat for energy while hibernating.
Some also store food like nuts or acorns to eat later in the winter. Bears, skunks,
chipmunks, and some bats hibernate.

Insects look for winter shelter in holes in the ground, under the bark of trees, deep inside
rotting logs or in any small cracks they can find. One of the most interesting places is in a
gall. A gall is a swelling on a plant. It is caused by certain insects, fungi or bacteria. They
make a chemical that affects the plant's growth in a small area, forming a lump. The gall
becomes its maker's home and food source.

48. What is hibernating?

26
49. What changes happen in the animals’ bodies when they are hibernating?

50. Why do animals eat extra during the fall?

51. Where do insects like to stay during winter?

Tom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled

brush. He surveyed the fence, and all gladness left him. Thirty yards of board fence nine
feet high. Sighing, he dipped his brush and passed it along the topmost plank; then he
repeated the operation; did it again; compared the insignificant whitewashed streak with
the far-reaching continent of unwhitewashed fence, and sat down on a tree-box
discouraged. Jim came skipping out of the gate with a tin pail, and singing Buffalo Gals.
Bringing water from the town pump had always been hateful work in Tom's eyes, before,
but now it did not strike him so. He remembered that there was company at the pump.
Many boys and girls were always there waiting their turns, resting, trading playthings,
quarrelling, fighting, skylarking. And he remembered that although the pump was only a

41
hundred and fifty yards off, Jim never got back with a bucket of water under an hour—and
even then somebody generally had to go after him. So he decided to go himself and asked

(2) Painting the fence
(3) Holding a bucket of whitewash and a long handled brush
(4) Bringing water from the pump
( )

(1) Because he wanted to get rid of Jim
(2) Because Jim would otherwise spill all the water
(3) He also wanted to skip and sing on the way to the pump
(4) He wanted to play with the children who would be at the pump
( )

34. Which of the following is true?

Just as it looked like they were succeeding, a stranger happened to chance upon the fight

44
and called the police.
In an instant, the police and the paramedics arrived at the scene and rushed Jack to
the emergency unit. Jack’s life could have been in grave danger had the stranger not
intervened to save him. A police report was made and Ben and his gang were arrested. The
fight was a result of vicious name- calling. Jack deeply regretted facing these tough guys

Owning a pet may be more interesting than you imagine. Let’s start with a rabbit.
Rabbits generally are safe and easy to take care of. However, if you have never
kept rabbits as pets before, you should avoid some breeds with long hair and long ears
such as the Angoras. You may think they are lovely and attractive but you will need to
spend a lot of time brushing and keeping their hair clean.
Rabbits are very active so they need a big hutch that gives them a lot of room to
move around. The rabbit’s hutch should be at least four times as long and twice as high as
the rabbit. Your rabbit’s hutch also needs to be dry all the time.
Rabbits are not difficult to feed. They love green food such as carrot tops, cabbage
leaves, green lettuce and grass. Oats and bread crusts can also be their food. And do not
forget to give them a lot of fresh water every day.

Some animals adopt camouflage to pratect (35) themselves from

their predators. A chameleon often camouflage (36) itself by

A zebra can deceige (38) its main predator, a lion, by blending its

wavy lines with the tall grass around them. Although the zebra’s stripes are black and

Section J: Comprehension Open-ended (5 x 2 marks)
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of
having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading,
but it had no pictures or conversations in it, "and what is the use of a book," thought Alice,
"without pictures or conversations?"
So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made
her feel very sleepy and stupid) whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be
worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit
with pink eyes ran close by her.
There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much
out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!"
(when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at
this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually took a watch
out of its waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet,
for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a
waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and burning with curiosity, she ran across
the field after it, and was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the
hedge.
In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the
world she was to get out again.
The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped
suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself
before she found herself falling down what seemed to be a very deep well.
( Adopted from “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Caroll)

48. Which word in the passage has the same meaning as “land along the side of a river or
lake”?

54
49. What did the rabbit look like?

50. When Alice saw the rabbit talking to itself, how did she feel?

51. Why did Alice run across the field after the rabbit?

52. What was the rabbit-hole like?

John, Jimmy, Daniel and I were in the same class when we were five, and since then
we have been best friends. We have had a lot fun together.
I remember the time in primary school when we always played soccer together for
an hour after school. Sometimes, we did not tell anyone where we were and we got into
trouble when our parents could not locate us.
In secondary school, instead of soccer, we became interested in catching
grasshoppers or butterflies. Daniel has shown an interest in these insects since then and
now he is a famous biologist. We had fun time following him to grass fields and running
after these insects. After that, with each one that we caught, he told us long stories of its
characteristics.
Amazingly, we went to the same college when we got older. Jimmy and I pursued
journalism, Mary took a business course and Daniel studied in the biological field.

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Four hundred years ago, most of the people who lived in Europe thought that the
earth was flat. They knew only the land that was near them. They knew the continent of
Europe, a small part of Asia, and a strip along the northern shore of Africa. They thought
this known land was surrounded by a vast body of water that was like a broad river.
Sailors were afraid to venture far upon this water for they feared they would fall over the
edge of the earth.
Other seafaring men believed that if they should sail too far out upon this water their
vessels would be lost in a fog or that they would suddenly begin to slide downhill, and
would never be able to return. Wind gods and storm gods too, were supposed to dwell in
this mysterious sea. People believed that the wind and storm gods would be very angry
with anyone who dared to enter their domains and that in their wrath they would hurl the
ships over the edge of the earth, or keep them wandering round and round in a circle, in
the mist and fog.
It is no wonder that the name "Sea of Darkness" was given to this great body of
water, which we now know to be the Atlantic Ocean; nor is it surprising that the sailors
feared to venture far out upon it.
(Adapted from ‘Discoverers and Explorers” by Edward. R. Shaw)

Section F: Comprehension MCQ (5 marks)

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

In leadership and origin the thirteen colonies, except New York and Delaware, were
English. During the early days, for all, save these two, the main, if not the sole current of
immigration was from England.
The colonists came from every walk of life. They were men, women, and children of
"all sorts and conditions." The major portions were yeomen, or small land owners, farm
labourers, and artisans. With them were merchants and gentlemen who brought their
stocks of goods or their fortunes to the New World. Scholars came from Oxford and
Cambridge to preach the gospel or to teach. Now and then, the son of an English
nobleman left his baronial hall behind and cast his lot with America. The people
represented every religious faith — members of the Established Church of England;
Puritans who had laboured to reform that church; Separatists, Baptists, and Friends, who
had left it altogether; and Catholics, who clung to the religion of their fathers.

Section J: Comprehension Open-ended (5 x 2 marks)

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Going camping is the best fun in the world if we know how to do it. Every healthy
boy and girl if given an opportunity should enjoy living outdoors for a week or two. There
is more to camping however than "roughing it" or seeing how much hardship we can bear.
A good camper always makes himself as comfortable as he can under the circumstances.
The saying that "an army travels on its stomach" means that a soldier cannot make long
marches or fight hard unless he has good food. The surest sign of a "tenderfoot" is the boy
who makes fun of you because you try to have a soft dry bed while he prefers to sleep on
the ground under the mistaken idea that it is manly or brave. He will usually spoil a trip in
the woods for everyone in the party.
Another poor kind of a camper pitches his tent so that his bed gets wet and his food
spoiled on the first rainy day, and then sits around cold and hungry trying hard to think
that he is having fun, to keep from getting homesick. This kind of a boy "locks the door
after the horse is stolen." If we go camping we must know how to prevent the unpleasant
things from happening. We must always be ready for wind and rain, heat and cold. A
camping party should make their plans a long time ahead in order to get their equipment
ready. Careful lists should be made of what we think we shall need. After we are out in the
woods, there will be no chance to run around the corner to the grocer's to get what we
have forgotten. If it is forgotten, we must simply make the best of it and not allow it to
spoil our trip
(Adopted from“ Outdoors Sports and Games” by Claude. H. Miller)

48. According to the author, what is the main principle of being a good camper?

72
49. According to the author, what is the action that may be mistaken as “manly or
brave”?

50. Which word from the passage has the same meaning as “ feeling relaxed and
pleasant “ ?

51. What should we do to prevent unpleasant things from happening?

52. If we forget to bring something for the camp, what should we do?

Section F: Comprehension MCQ (5 marks)

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

My father's family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant
tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit than Pip. So, I called
myself Pip, and came to be called Pip.
I give Pirrip as my father's family name, on the authority of his tombstone and my
sister, Mrs. Joe Gargery, who married the blacksmith. As I never saw my father or my
mother, and never saw any likeness of either of them (for their days were long before the
days of photographs), my first fancies regarding what they were like were unreasonably
derived from their tombstones. The shape of the letters on my father's, gave me an odd
idea that he was a square, stout, dark man, with curly black hair. From the character and
turn of the inscription, "Also Georgiana Wife of the Above," I drew a childish conclusion
that my mother was freckled and sickly. To five little stone lozenges, each about a foot
and a half long, which were arranged in a neat row beside their grave, and were sacred to

78
the memory of five little brothers of mine, who gave up trying to live, exceedingly early in
that universal struggle, I am indebted for a belief I religiously entertained that they had all
been born on their backs with their hands in their trousers-pockets, and had never taken
them out in this state of existence.

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

My father had a small estate in Nottinghamshire: I was the third of five sons. He
sent me to Emanuel College in Cambridge at fourteen years old, where I resided three
years, and applied myself close to my studies; but the charge of maintaining me, although
I had a very scanty allowance, being too great for a narrow fortune, I was bound
apprentice to Mr. James Bates, an eminent surgeon in London, with whom I continued
four years. My father now and then sending me small sums of money, I laid them out in
learning navigation, and other parts of the mathematics, useful to those who intend to
travel, as I always believed it would be some time or other, my fortune to do. When I left
Mr. Bates, I went down to my father: where, by the assistance of him and my uncle John,
and some other relations, I got forty pounds, and a promise of thirty pounds a year to
maintain me at Leyden: there I studied physic for two years and seven months, knowing it
would be useful in long voyages.

Soon after my return from Leyden, I was recommended by my good master, Mr.

81
Bates, to be a surgeon to the Swallow, Captain Abraham Pannel, commander; with whom
I continued three years and a half, making a voyage or two into the Levant, and some
other parts. When I came back I resolved to settle in London; to which Mr. Bates, my
master, encouraged me, and by him I was recommended to several patients. I took part of
a small house in the Old Jewry; and being advised to alter my condition, I married Mrs.
Mary Burton, second daughter to Mr. Edmund Burton, hosier, in Newgate-street, with
whom I received four hundred pounds for a portion.

Section F: Comprehension MCQ (5 marks)

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

Emma Woodhouse, beautiful, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy
disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly
twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or to vex her.
She was the younger of the two daughters of a most affectionate, indulgent father;
and had, in consequence of her sister's marriage, been mistress of his house from a very
early period. Her mother had died too long ago for her to have more than an indistinct
remembrance of her caresses; and her place had been supplied by an excellent woman as
governess, who had fallen a little short of a mother in affection.
Sixteen years had Miss Taylor been in Mr. Woodhouse’s family, less as a governess
than a friend, very fond of both daughters, but particularly of Emma. Between them it was
more the intimacy of sisters. Even before Miss Taylor had ceased to hold the nominal
office of governess, the mildness of her temper had hardly allowed her to impose any
restraint; and the shadow of authority being now long passed away, they had been living
together as friends, who were very mutually attached, and Emma doing just what she
liked; holding Miss Taylor's judgment in high esteem, but directed chiefly by her own.

Section J: Comprehension Open-ended (5 x 2 marks)
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Civilization in its onward march has produced only three important non-alcoholic
beverages—the extract of the tea plant, the extract of the cocoa bean, and the extract of the
coffee bean.

Leaves and beans—these are the vegetable sources of the world's favourite non-
alcoholic table-beverages. Of the two, the tea leaves lead in total amount consumed; the
coffee beans are second; and the cocoa beans are a distant third, although advancing
steadily. But in international commerce the coffee beans occupy a far more important
position than either of the others, being imported into non-producing countries to twice the
extent of the tea leaves. All three enjoy a world-wide consumption, although not to the
same extent in every nation; but where either the coffee bean or the tea leaf has established
itself in a given country, the other gets comparatively little attention, and usually has great
difficulty in making any advance. The cocoa bean, on the other hand, has not risen to the
position of popular favourite in any important consuming country, and so has not aroused
the serious opposition of its two rivals.

Coffee is universal in its appeal. All nations do it homage. It has become

recognized as a human necessity. It is no longer a luxury or an indulgence; it is a corollary
of human energy and human efficiency. People love coffee because of its two-fold
effect—the pleasurable sensation and the increased efficiency it produces.

( Adapted from “All about coffee” by William H. Ukers)
