TITLE: SUBJECT MATTER OF THE INQUIRY OR RESEARCH
This lesson provides information on the guidelines that one researcher needs to consider
OVERVIEW/ INTRODUCTION in choosing an inquiry/ a research topic and discusses the things that must be avoided in
formulating a research topic.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE/S The learner should be able to characterize a researchable topic.
LEARNING OUTCOME/S Construct three (3) research topics in line with principles of choosing research topic.
A topic is considered researchable if the knowledge and information governing it are supported by evidence that are
observable, factual, and logical. In order to attain this, the following are strongly suggested in selecting a research topic
(Babbie, 2013):
1. Controversial Topics – topics which tend be greatly dependent on the writer’s opinion which has tendencies to
become biased or prejudiced.

2. Highly technical subjects- For beginners, it is highly recommended to refrain meantime to research topics that
requires advanced study, technical knowledge, and great experience.
3. Hard-to-Investigate Subjects- A subject is considered hard to investigate if there are no available source of
information about it or if such source of information is not updated.
4. Too broad subjects- It is advisable for researchers to undertake a smaller aspect of the topic rather than to embrace
the totality of a broad topic.
5. Too narrow subjects – These subjects are so limited or specific that an extensive or thorough searching or reading
for information about these is unnecessary.
6. Vague Subjects- A researcher must make use of vocabulary that leads to a clear focus of the topic. One must
refrain from using words that ambiguity or uncertainty.
The following can help a researcher generate ideas about a good research topic:
