MODULE No. 1
TITLE: SUBJECT MATTER OF THE INQUIRY OR RESEARCH
This lesson provides information on the guidelines that one researcher needs to consider
OVERVIEW/ INTRODUCTION in choosing an inquiry/ a research topic and discusses the things that must be avoided in
formulating a research topic.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE/S The learner should be able to characterize a researchable topic.
LEARNING OUTCOME/S Construct three (3) research topics in line with principles of choosing research topic.

PART 1. CONTENT AND DISCUSSION:

A topic is considered researchable if the knowledge and information governing it are supported by evidence that are
observable, factual, and logical. In order to attain this, the following are strongly suggested in selecting a research topic
(Babbie, 2013):

GUIDELINES IN CHOOSING A RESEARCH TOPIC:

1. Researcher’s Interest in the Subject Matter

- One must consider a research topic that triggers his/ her interest.
2. Availability of the information Needed
- The researcher must be aware about the vastness of sources where he or she could possibly get the
information that are needed in the study/ investigation being studied. One must assure the validity and reliability
of these sources to serve as evidence in supporting the claims governing the identified topic for investigation.
3. Timeliness and Relevance of a Topic
- A topic is RELEVANT if yields results that are instrumental in societal improvement. It is TIMELY if it is related
to issues or concerns existing at present in the society.
4. Limitations on the Subject
- It is also important for a researcher to take note of the challenges that one may encounter in conducting the
investigation. This will allow the researcher to prepare oneself of the possible means on how one could address
the restrictions in the study
5. Personal Resources
- This is the time that a researcher will assess one research abilities in terms of financial standing, health
conditions, mental capacity, needed facilities, and time allotment to enable him or her to complete his or her
research.

RESEARCH TOPICS TO BE AVOIDED:

1. Controversial Topics – topics which tend be greatly dependent on the writer’s opinion which has tendencies to
become biased or prejudiced.

2. Highly technical subjects- For beginners, it is highly recommended to refrain meantime to research topics that
requires advanced study, technical knowledge, and great experience.
3. Hard-to-Investigate Subjects- A subject is considered hard to investigate if there are no available source of
information about it or if such source of information is not updated.
4. Too broad subjects- It is advisable for researchers to undertake a smaller aspect of the topic rather than to embrace
the totality of a broad topic.
5. Too narrow subjects – These subjects are so limited or specific that an extensive or thorough searching or reading
for information about these is unnecessary.
6. Vague Subjects- A researcher must make use of vocabulary that leads to a clear focus of the topic. One must
refrain from using words that ambiguity or uncertainty.

SOURCES OF RESEARCH TOPICS:

The following can help a researcher generate ideas about a good research topic:

1. Mass Media communication- press (newspaper, ads, TV, radio, films)

2. Books, Internet, peer-reviewed journals, government publications
3. Professional Periodicals
4. General Periodicals
5. Previous reading assignments in other subjects
6. Work experience

PART 2. LEARNING TASK

topic.
