QUESTION 1 COLD WATER SUPPLY

1.1 Indicate whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE. Choose the
answer and write only 'true' or 'false' next to the question number
(1.1.1–1.1.10) in the ANSWER BOOK.

1.1.1 The impurity that is mostly found in untreated water is a toxic


substance derived from industrial waste.

1.1.2 A chlorine chemical is used to sterilise water.

1.1.3 The vibration of pipework is sometimes caused by excessive water


velocity.

1.1.4 Water hammer is caused by air trapped in pipes.

1.1.5 Ordinary water with a good smell and sweet taste should be safe to
drink.

1.1.6 The chlorination process is done during water purification to kill the

QUESTION 2: HOT-WATER SUPPLY

2.1 Name any SEVEN components of a combination electric geyser. Write only
the name of the component in the ANSWER BOOK. (7)

2.2 Name TWO disadvantages for the domestic user to note if the pressure in a
fixed geyser is not balanced at the various draw-off points. (2)

2.3 Give the SANS (SABS) abbreviations for the following valves:

2.3.1 Pressure reducing valve

2.3.2 Shower

2.4 Make a neat single-line diagrammatical sketch of TWO electric vertical


pressure geysers that are interconnected.

Clearly indicate ALL the necessary valves and pipework which will ensure that
the geysers could be used together or as individual units (one at a time). (9)

QUESTION 3: DRAINAGE

3.1 Give TWO reasons to indicate why it is important to test drainage installation. (2)

3.2 List NINE procedural steps (in sequential order), which will make provision to
conduct an air test on drainage pipes for the possible prevention against
leaks. (9)

3.3 Name THREE instances where a stub stack sanitary pipework installation will
have to be vented. (3)

3.4 Show with the aid of a neat sketch a two-pipe sanitary system in a two-storey
building. (8)

3.5 Answer this question on DIAGRAM SHEET 1 (attached).

The layout plan on DIAGRAM SHEET 1 shows a domestic dwelling with an


outbuilding.

Complete the plan of the drainage installation layout and show the following
details:

 ONE vented stub stack


 ONE unvented stub stack
 ONE gulley
 At least ONE inspection eye

3.6 Entry points to drainage installations are crucial, thus enabling plumbers to
access pipes, to repair damages and to clear unwanted blockages.

QUESTION 4: SHEET-METAL WORK AND FLASHING

This question must be answered on DIAGRAM SHEET 2.

DIAGRAM SHEET 2 (attached) shows a square to round transition piece that connects
a 600 mm square duct to a 300 mm air conditioning duct.

Make use of the radial line method and develop the complete pattern of the transition
piece on the diagram sheet provided.

Use scale 1 : 10.

QUESTION 5: CALCULATIONS

A water supply tank with a mass of 270 kg has a base area of 2 m × 2 m and a height
of 1,5 m. The overflow outlet is 200 mm from the top of the tank.

Calculate the following:

5.1 The maximum volume of the water that the tank can hold (2)

5.2 The mass of the tank if it is full of water (4)

5.3 The total area of material (in m2) required to manufacture the tank. Ignore any
allowance for seams or a lid.

NOTE: The density of water is 1 000 kg/m3. (4)
