Aircraft carrier is a war ship that serves as a seagoing airbase,

equipped with a full length flight deck and facilities for carrying,
arming, deploying and recovering aircraft. India presently has 1
Aircraft carrier which is INS Vikramaditya. Vikramaditya entered the
service with Indian Navy in 2013. It has been named after legendary
emperor of Ujjain Vikramaditya. It was built by Russia. It was
purchased by India in July 2013.It was commissioned in 16 November
2013.Motto is StrikeFar, Strike Sure. Its weight is 45,400 tons; Length
is 283.5 meters; Speed is 56km/h. It carries 26 Mikoyan MiG-29K
multi-role fighters; 10 Kamov Ka-31 AEW&C and Kamov Ka-28 ASW
helicopters.

India also recently decommissioned an aircraft carrier INS Viraat. It


was named after Sanskrit word Virata means “Giant”. It was
commissioned on 12 May 1987 and decommissioned on 6 March
2017.It’s motto is” Jalameva Yasya, Balam Tasya” which means “He
who rules over the seas is all powerful”. Its weight is 28700 tons; length is
226.5 tons; speed is 52km/h.It was having 16 British Aerospace Sea
Harrier FRS51; 4 Westland Sea King Mk.42B-C; 2 HAL Chetak; 2 HAL
Dhruv.

India also started constructing aircraft carrier INS Vishal. It is being


built by Cochin Shipyard Limited.It’s weight will be 65000 tonnes. It is
expected to come into service by 2025.

Amphibious warfare ship is a warship employed to land and sypport


ground forces, such as marines, on enemy, on enemy territory during
an amphibious assault. Some of them are INS Shardul, INS Kesari, INS
Airavat, INS Magar, INS Cheetah, INS Mahish, and INS Guldar.

INS Kesari was aKumbhir-class tank landing ship of the Indian Navy.It
was built by Poland and came into service of India on 15 August 1975
and was decommissioned on 8 May 1999. Its length is 83.2meters;
Weight is 1120 tons; Speedis 33 Km/h. It contains 1 HAL Chetak.

INS Airvat is the third Shardul-class amphibious warfare vessel of the


Indian Navy. It was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Enginners
in Kolkata. It was commissioned on 19 May 2009. It’s length is 125
meters; Speed is 30 km/h; Weight is 5650 tons. It contains
1westland Sea King or HAL Dhruv.

INS Cheetah is Kumbhir-class tank landing ship of the Indian Navy. It


was built by Poland. It was commissioned on Febrauary1985. It’s
weight is 1120 tons; Length is 83.9 meters; Speed is 33 km/h. It
contains 1 HAL Chetak.

Frigate is warship with a mixed armament, generally lighter than a


destroyer and of a kind originally introduced for conveys escort
work. India has 14 Frigates. Some of them are INS Shivalik, INS
Satpura, INS Sahayadri, INS Talwar, INS Trishul, INS Tabar, INS
Bramhaputra, INS Betwa, INS Beas. INS Shivalik is named after
Shivalik hills and was commissioned on 29 April 2010. It’s weight is
6200 tons; Length is 142.5 meters; Speed s 59 km/h. IT has 2 HAL
Dhruv or Sea king Mk.42B helicopters.

INS Trishul was commissioned on 25 June 2003.It is a model of


Talwar class. It’s weight is 4035 tons; Length is 124.8 meters; Speed
is 56 km/h. It has 1 Ka-28 Helix-A, Ka-31 Helix B or HAL Dhruv .

INS Bramhaputra was named after river Bramhaputra. It was


commissioned on 14 April 2000. It’s weight is 3850 tons; Length is
126.4 meters; Speed is 56 km/h; Range is 4500 nautical miles. It has 1
Sea King, 1 MATCH Helos.
