Word Making

Beginners Directions:
1. Cut out the letters on the following page.
2. Review each letter’s sound with your child.
3. Slide the letters to the top of your workspace.
4. Demonstrate how to make the word “mat” by saying the word slowly
and “s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g” the sounds. Pull down each letter in the word
one at a time as you continue to repeat the word slowly. Run your fin-
ger slowly under the entire word as you make each individual sound.
Then run your finger under the word quickly as you say the word
“mat” regularly.
5. Move the letters back to the top of the workspace and have your child
try to make the word “mat”. Guide and model as needed.
6. As your child’s attention allows, repeat for the words “sat,” “on”,
“Sam,” “and,” “cat,” and “sad.”

Advanced Directions:
(after mastery of beginners directions)
1. Instruct your child to make the word “mat”.
2. Ask him/her to change one letter in “mat” to make the word “sat.”
Help by removing the letter “m” back to the top of the workspace if
your child appears stuck. Say the word “sat” slowly, stretching the
sounds to help.
3. Ask him/her to change one letter in “sat” to make the word “Sam.”
4. Continue from “Sam” to “sad” to “sat” to “cat.”
5. Model and guide as needed.

Sentence Making
Directions:
1. Cut out the words on the following page.
2. Practice reading each word with your child.
3. Slide the words to the top of your workspace.
4. Read a sentence from the book. Repeat the sentence slowly as you
model how to pull down each word as you say it and line it up in a row.
Don’t forget to put the period on the end!
5. Move the words back to the top of the workspace and have your child
try to make the same sentence. Guide and model as needed.
6. As your child’s attention allows, repeat for the other sentences in the
book.

Too Easy?
Have your child make up their own sentence using the cut-apart words,
and read it to you.

Too Hard?
Lay the book on the table and have your child match the cut-apart words
to the words in print to make their sentence.

Sign Language Words
Practice Your Words & Learn a New
Language at the Same T ime!
Directions:
You may leave this sheet whole, or laminate and cut apart the word cards.
Practice signing the words by saying each letter as you make the appro-
priate hand motion. Say the word when you finish. “M-A-T Mat.”
As an extension, you can practice signing to each other and having the
other person say the letters and then the word that was spelled!

Play Dough Words
Directions:
1. Print the following pages and then laminate, or insert into a plastic
page protector. Card stock or other sturdy paper is suggested. If you
are laminating, you can cut the words apart. If you are putting into a
plastic sleeve, there will be two words per sheet.
2. Teach your child how to roll long “snakes” using play dough. Home-
made play dough is suggested as it is much easier to manipulate.
3. Form the play dough “snakes” on top of the printed letters.
4. Practice reading the Play Dough Words.

BOB Book Bottle
Phonics Practice and Sensory Play in One!
Directions:
Print this page on sturdy paper such as card stock (or on printer paper and lami-
nate). Cut out the words below. Prepare a clear drink bottle by removing the label
and cleaning thoroughly. Once dry, partially fill with rice, grains, small beads,
sand, or other small easily movable material. Add the words to the bottle. Have
your child read the words as he/she find them! You can also have them use the
checklist to try to find and read each word. Have them fill in the circle under the
word when they find it!

Directions: Read aloud the question/prompt written below. Allow your
child some time to draw their response in the box. When they are fin-
ished, ask them to tell you about what they drew. Write what they say
under the box and read it back to them when finished.
