Question 1
(a) State the effects of a force applied on (i) a non-rigid body, and (ii) a rigid body.

(b) Two unequal and opposite forces act on a stationary body. Will the body
move ? Give reason and also mention the direction of motion. [2]
(c) Explain the phenomenon : dust particles are removed from a carpet by
beating it. [2]
(d) Derive the relation between S.I. and cgs unit of force. [2]
(e) A body of mass 500 g initially at rest, is acted upon by a force which cause it
to move a distance of 4 m in 2 s. calculate the force applied. [2]

(a) Why is the tip of an allpin made sharp ? [2]
(b) State pascal’s law of transmission of pressure. [2]
(c) Pressure at free surface of a water lake P1 , while a point at depth h below its
free surface is P2 .
(i) How are P1 and P2 related ? (ii) Which is more P1 or P2 ? [2]
(d) What force is applied on a piston of area of cross section 2 cm2 to obtain a
force 150 N on the piston of area of cross section 12 cm2 in a hydraulic machine?

(e) Define the thrust and state its S.I. unit. [2]

(a) A body of volume V and density Ps , floats with the volume v inside a liquid of
density PL. show that

(b) A wooden block floats in water with two – third of its volume submerged.
(i) Calculate the density of wood (ii) When the same block is placed on oil, three
quarter of its volume is immersed in oil. Calculate the density of oil. [4]
(c) Explain, why does a ship submerge more as it sails from sea water to river
water? [3]
Question 4
(a) A body weighs W gf in air and W1 gf when it is completely immersed in water.
Find : (i) volume of the body, (ii) up-thrust on the body, (iii) relative density of
material of the body. [3]
(b) A piece of iron weighs 44.5 gf in air. If the density of iron is 8.9 x 103 kg/m3,
find the weight of iron piece when immersed in water. [3]
(c) (i) State Archimedes’ principle.
(ii) it is easier to lift a heavy stone under water than in air, explain. [4]
Question 5
(a) What is an altimeter ? state its principle. How is its scale calibrated. [3]
(b) Explain the principle of a hydraulic machine with a suitable diagram. Name
two devices which works on this principle. [4]
(c) Assuming the density of air to be 1.295 kg/m3 , find the fall in barometric
height in mm of Hg at a height of 107 m above the sea level. Take the density of
mercury = 13.6 x 103 kg/m3. [3]
