Class – XI
PHYSIC (Theory)
Time: 3 hrs. M.M. 70
Note: You will not be allowed to write during the first fifteen minutes. This time is to spent in reading the question
paper. The time given at the head of this paper is the time allowed for writing the answers. Answer all
question form Part I and eight question from Part II choosing four questions from section A, two question
from section B and two questions from section C.
Part I
Section A
Attempt any four questions.
2. (a) Assuming that the mass ‘m’ of the largest stone that can be moved by a flowing river depends upon the
Velocity v of water, Its density ρ and acceleration due to gravity g. Show that m varies as the sixth power of
the velocity of water in the river. [3]
(b) Prove that for a triangle sin /A=sin β/B = sin γ/C, where the vectors A, Band C sides of the triangle opposite
to the angles α , β, γ, respectively. [4]
3. (a) State and prove Bernoulli’s Theorem. [3]
(b) Explain theorem of perpendicular axes and calculate the moment of inertia rectangular lamina about an axis
Perpendicular to the plane and through the centre of mass. [4]
4. (a) State Newton s second law of motion and prove that impulse is equal to change in momentum produced. [3]
(b) The resultant vector of p and Q is R. On reversing the direction of Q the resultant vector becomes S. Show
that R² + S² = 2(P² + Q²). [4]
5. (a) At What height above the earth s surface the acceleration due to gravity will 1/9 th of its value at the earth’s
Surface? Radius of earth is 6400 km. [3]
(b) Two drops of equal radii are falling through air with a terminal velocity of 5cm/sec. If they coalesce into one
drop, what will be terminal velocity of the new drop? [4]
6. (a) Calculate the rate of flow of glycerin of density 1.25 x 103kgm-3 through the conical section of a pipe if the
radii of its ends are 0.1m and 0.04m and pressure drop across its length is 10Nm-2. [3]
(b) A moving ball of mass 2kg undergoes an elastic head on collision with another ball at Its original speed.
While the second ball starts moving forward. Find the mass of the second ball. [4]
7. (a) When a car moving at a speed of 10m/s meets a road inclined at an angle of 30 0 with the horizontal, its
engine is shut off. How much distance will the car cover on the incline before coming to rest? The coefficient
of friction between the wheels of the car and the inclined plane is μ = 0.2. Take g =9.8m/s 2. [3]
(b) Explain Kepler’s law of planetary motion and give the proof for second law. [4]
SECTION B
Answer any two questions.
8. (a) Explain the meaning of molar specific heats Cp and Cv for an ideal gas. Establish Mayer’s formula Cp- Cv =
R, where the symbols have their usual meanings. [3]
(b) What is a heat engine and what is its efficiency? Hence show that the engine cannot convert ‘all’ the heat
taken in form a hot source into work. A Carnot’s heat engine working between 300K and 600k has a work
output of 800J per cycle. Calculate the heat supplied to the engine from the source. [3]
9. (a) Obtain an expression for external work done by an ideal gas in an adiabatic process. [3]
(b) What is capillarity? Establish a relation among the height ‘h’ of water column in a glass capillary tube. The
internal radius ‘r’ of the tube and surface tension “T’ of water. [3]
10. (a) A body cools in 7 minutes from 600C to 400C. What will be its temperature of surrounding is 100C. Assume
that the Newton’s Law of cooling holds good throughout. [3]
(b) The length of a rubber cord increases to 60 cm under a weight of 100 gm suspended from it and to 70cm
under a weight of 120 gm find the initial length of cord. [3]
Section C
11. (a) Establish relation between particle velocity and wave velocity of a plane progressive simple harmonic wave
travelling with velocity v along positive direction of x-axis. [2]
(b) Prove analytically that in a closed organ pipe of length l, the frequency of the vibrating v along positive
column of (2m-1)v/4l, where m is an integer and v is velocity of sound in air. [3]
12. (a) Two tuning forks A and B when sounded together produced 6 beats per second. On loading the fork A with
a little wax, they produced 4 beats per second. The frequency of fork B is 384 Hz. Determine of the
frequency of the fork A before loading and after loading. [2]
(b) What are the necessary condition for the interference of sounds waves? What do you understand by
constructive and destructive interference? [3]
13. (a) Obtain the expression for kinetic and potential erosion of the body executing S.H.M Proof that its total
energy is proportional to the square of the amplitude of oscillations. [2]
(b) Show that the ratio of the apparent frequency to the real frequency of a source is equal to the ratio of the
velocity of the wave relative to the observer and the velocity of the wave relative to the source. [3]
