General Instructions:
1. There are 35 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
2. This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section
E. All the sections are compulsory.
3. Section A contains fifteen MCQ and three Assertions – Reason questions of 1 mark each,
Section B contains seven questions of 2 marks each, Section C contains five questions of 3
marks each, section D contains three long questions of 5 marks each and Section E contains 2
case study based questions of 4 marks each.
4. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in section B, C, D
and E. You have to attempt only one of the choices in such questions.

22. The frequency f of vibration of a stretched string depends upon
(i) its length L (ii) its mass per unit length m and (iii)the tension T in the string. Obtain
dimensionally an expression for frequency f.
23. State first law of thermodynamics. On its basis establish the relation between two molar
specific heats for a gas.

Explain what happens when the load on a metal wire suspended from a rigid support is gradually
increased. Illustrate your answer with a suitable Stress – Strain graph.
27. A car moving along a straight highway with speed of 126 km h-1 is brought to a stop within a
distance of 200 m. What is the retardation of the car (assumed uniform), and how long does it
take for the car to stop?

The relation between t and distance x is t = ax2 + bx, where a & b are constants. Express the
instantaneous acceleration in terms of instantaneous velocity?
28 Find the total energy of the particle executing SHM and show graphically the variation of
potential energy and kinetic energy with the time in SHM. What is the frequency of these
energies with respect to the frequency of the particle executing simple harmonic motion.
29. State Stoke ‘s law. Deduce this based on dimensional considerations?
30. Define torque. Derive the relationship between torque & angular momentum.

SECTION-D
31. Two vectors ⃗ A and ⃗ B are inclined to each other at an angle θ. Using parallelogram law of
vector addition, find analytically the magnitude and direction of their resultant. Discuss the
special cases, when (i) θ =0 (ii) θ=180°and (iii) 900.

What is a projectile? Draw the path of a projectile motion in a graph. Derive the expression for
(a) the Total time of flight of a projectile (b) the Maximum height of a projectile & the horizontal
range of the projectile.
32. Define centipetal force . Derive the expression maximum velocity with which a car can travel
on a banked road with the necessary diagram.

Define inelastic collision. Derive the expression for the final velocity of the first and second
object in a one-dimensional elastic collision and discuss what happens if masses are equal.
33. State Bernoulli’s principle. Prove that sum of kinetic, potential and pressure of a streamlined
flow of non-viscous liquid is constant at any point inside the liquid flow with neat diagram.

Define orbital velocity. Derive an expression for the orbital velocity of a satellite. Establish a
relation for orbital velocity of a satellite orbiting very close to the surface of the earth. Find the
ratio of the orbital velocity and escape velocity.

34. Case Study


Read the following paragraph and answer the questions.
Stationary Waves & Progressive Waves :
When two progressive waves of equal amplitude and frequency, travelling in a opposite
directions along a straight line superpose each other. The resultant wave does not a
travelling either direction and is called as stationary or standing wave. At some points the
particles of the medium always remain at the rest. These are called nodes. At some other
points the amplitude of oscillation is maximum. These are called antinodes.
(i) Compare Progressive waves & Stationary waves. (1)
(ii) The displacement equation of a stationary wave formed on a string is given by
y=4sin(314t)cos(πx) where x  is distance in meter measured from the origin and t  is time expressed in
seconds. The amplitude of vibrations at a distance of meter from the origin will be

(iii) Show that the various frequencies of stationary waves in a string are in the ratio

35. As per first law of thermodynamics, the change in internal energy of a system is equal to the
heat absorbed by the system minus the work done by the system. If the initial and final states of

By applying First law of thermodynamics one can derive equation of state for Isothermal and
adiabatic process as well as the work done during an isothermal and adiabatic Process.
