PROJECTILE MOTION (Part 1)

I. Introductory Concept
A projectile is any object thrown into space upon which the only acting force is gravity. The
primary force acting on a projectile is gravity. This doesn’t necessarily mean that other forces do
not act on it, just that their effect is minimal compared to gravity. The path followed by a projectile
is known as a trajectory. A baseball batted or thrown is an example of the projectile.
When a particle is thrown obliquely near the earth’s surface, it moves along a curved path
under constant acceleration that is directed towards the center of the earth (we assume that the
particle remains close to the surface of the earth). The path of such a particle is called a projectile
and the motion is called projectile motion.
In a Projectile Motion, there are two simultaneous independent rectilinear motions: a) along
the x-axis, which has a uniform velocity responsible for the horizontal (forward) motion of the
particle and b) along y-axis, which has a uniform acceleration responsible for the vertical
(downwards) motion of the particle.

Acceleration in the horizontal projectile motion and vertical projectile motion of a particle:
When a particle is projected in the air with some speed, the only force acting on it during its time in
the air is the acceleration due to gravity (g). This acceleration acts vertically downward. There is no
acceleration in the horizontal direction, which means that the velocity of the particle in the
horizontal direction remains constant.

II. Learning Skills/Competency

Describe the horizontal and vertical motions of a projectile. (S9FE-IVa-34)

III. Activities
Activity 1. Horizontal and Vertical Components of Projectile Motion
Match the equation of Projectile Motion in Column A with the description in column B.

COLUMN A COLUMN B
______ 1. Vy a. height
______ 2. Vx b. vertical velocity
______ 3. h c. acceleration due to gravity
______ 4. ax d. horizontal acceleration
______ 5. ay e. vertical acceleration
______ 6. hmax f. distance or range
______ 7. dx g. horizontal velocity
______ 8. t h. horizontal displacement
______ 9. g i. maximum height
______ 10. D j. time

Activity 2. Two-Dimensional Kinematics

A. Based from given illustration, write True if the statement is correct and
False, if incorrect. Write the answer in your notebook.

__________1. There is no horizontal force acting on a projectile thus, ignoring air

resistance, its horizontal speed is constant.
__________2. A body projected horizontally moves downward with increasing vertical
speed.
__________3. Vertical and horizontal motions of a projectile are independent from one
another.
__________4. Ignoring air resistance, projectiles launched horizontally moves with only
the gravitational force acting on it.
__________5. The launch force keeps on acting on the object after it was thrown.
__________6. Vertical motion of a body launched horizontally is the same as that of a
freely falling object.
__________ 7. There is no horizontal acceleration.
__________ 8. Vertical acceleration is always equal to -9.8 m/s2

For item #9, refer to the illustration below.

Along the bottom is a black horizontal line. To the left

and above the line is a small grey ball. A dashed grey
arrow arcs from the left side to the right side. A black dot
is on the top of the arc and is labeled P.

9. Which direction is the ball’s vertical velocity at point P (the peak of the trajectory)?
A. Up B. Down C. Not enough info D. No vertical velocity
10. Jaime kicked a ball on a level surface at 45°(degrees) and 30°(degrees) with the same
total speed as shown below.

Along the bottom is a horizontal black line. Above the

line are two gray balls on either side of the line. Each ball
has an arrow pointing upwards away from it and to the
right. The angle from the black horizontal line to each
ball is shown by a dashed arc. The left ball's arc is labeled
30 degrees and the right side is labeled 45 degrees.

Which launch angle causes the ball to be in the air for the longest time?
A. Times are the same C. 30 degree
B. Not enough information D. 45 degree

B. Match the description in column A to the illustration in column B.
