in an atom

A. Readings/Discussions

All atoms of an element contain the same number of protons in their nuclei. This number
is the element’s atomic number. The atomic number, or the number of protons,
distinguishes one element from others. The mass number, or the total number of protons
and neutrons, distinguishes an isotope of a particular element to its other isotopes. The
average mass number or the element’s naturally occurring isotopes multiplied with their
abundance gives the atomic mass of the element. On the other hand, the number of
electrons of an atom may change resulting in the formation of ions.

The atomic number (Z) of the element is the number of protons in the nucleus. Since an
atom is electrically neutral, then the number of protons must be equal to the number of
electrons.

Since the mass of an atom is concentrated in the nucleus, the mass number (A) is equal
to the sum of the masses of protons and neutrons.

Steps in determining the number of electrons, protons, neutrons:

Atomic number = number of protons = number of electrons

Mass number = number of protons + number of neutrons

Example:1

Elements Atomic Mass Proton Electron Neutron

number (Z) number (A)

P+N

Na (Sodium) 11 23 11 11 12

Ni (Nickel) _____ 59 28 ______ ______

Answer:

Ni 28 59 28 28 31
The answer for atomic number of Ni is 28 for the reason that atomic number is equal to
the number of protons and also equals to the number of electrons. In determining the
number of neutrons is by subtracting mass number by its atomic number (59 - 28 = 31)

Example Number 2:

Elements Atomic Mass Proton Electron Neutron

number(Z) number(A)

P+N

Ac _______ 227 _______ 89 _______

GUIDE

For the Teacher:

Advise the students to read the Reading and Discussion portion before they attempt to answer
the practice exercises. Let the learners go through the parts sequentially to help them understand
the topic easily. The Key Answers are for you to refer during the checking. Don’t include it in
the printing.
For the Learner:

Read thoroughly and understand the Self-Learning Home Task from the first part to the last
part. By doing so, will help you understand better the topic. If you still have enough time, do it
twice for more understanding. You can use a dictionary if you find it hard to comprehend the
science terms. Use a separate sheet for your answers.

For the Parent/Home Tutor:

Assist your child and make sure that he/she reads the Self-Learning Home Task from the
beginning up to end, to ensure proper understanding of the concepts. Don’t feed the answer to
your child. Let her/him do it on his own.
