Awareness

What is the effect of the force and time on the motion of the object?
Activity Activity 7 Playing Egg Volleyball pages 261-262)
 The teacher will explain the mechanics of the game before performing the activity
 Students stay outside the classroom and perform the activity

Analysis Guide Questions:

1. Was the handkerchief able to protect the egg from breaking?
Yes. The egg did not break when the handkerchief was used to toss and catch it.
2. How was the impact force lessened by the use of the handkerchief?
The handkerchief increased the time of action therefore lessening the impact of force on the
egg. This prevented the egg from breaking
Abstraction  Impulse occurs as force is applied to an object over a period of time
 Impulse = force x time or
Newton's Second Law of Motion: force is the rate of change of momentum,
F = Δp/t
 For a fixed value of the change in momentum,the impact force is smaller when the impact time is
bigger while the impact force is bigger when then impact time is smaller
Application
Why is it important to think “ safety” when driving or riding an automobile?

Assessment
An object travels with a velocity 4m/s to the east. Then, its direction of motion and magnitude of
velocity are changed. Picture given below shows the directions and magnitudes of velocities. Find the
impulse given to this object.

I=F.Δt=Δp=m.ΔV
where ΔV=V2-V1=-3-4=-7m/s
I=m.ΔV=3.(-7)=-21kg.m/s

Assignment Applying the concepts of impulse and momentum the students are ask to

Create a campaign poster on driving safely .
