WHAT IS IMPULSE?
Applying a force over a time interval to an
object changes the momentum. A change in
momentum is known as an impulse.

The vector quantity for impulse is

represented by the letter "J", and since it's a
change in momentum, [kg.m/s], and can also
be written as a Newton-second [N.s].
IMPULSE
If momentum changes, it's because mass or
velocity change. Most often mass doesn't
change so velocity changes and this is
acceleration.

p= mass x v (Don't forget is "change in" )

p= mass x Acceleration
p= force
IMPULSE FORMULA:
Impulse= force x time
Impulse= p

J= F . t (N . s)

J= Impulse
p= momentum (kg . m/s)
F= force (N)
t= time (s)
WORD PROBLEMS
IMPULSE EXAMPLE

• If the football halfback experienced a force

of 800 N for 0.9 seconds to the North,
determine the impulse.

Given: F= 800 N
Formula: J=
t= 0.9s
F . t J= 800N (0.9s)
Solution:
J=?
J= 720 N.s
2. A model rocket's engine is designed to deliver an
impulse of 6.0 N. s. If the rocket engine burns for
0.75 s, what is the force does the engine produce?
Given: J= 6.0 N. s
t= 0.75 s
F= ? Derivation: J= F . t
t t
Solution;
Formula: F= J/t

F= 6.0N.s/0.75s
F= 8N
3. A soccer ball is travelling when it hits the wall and
bounces off of the wall with an impulse of 20 N. s. If the
wall exerted a force of 650 N on the ball, how long was the
ball in contact with the wall?

Derivation: J= F. t
Given: J= 20 N.s F F
F=650 N Formula: t=J/F
t=?

Solution: t= 20N. s/650N

t= 0.03s
MOMENTUM: IMPULSE
THEOREM
Formula: F= p

t
F t= p

Impulse= p
p=mv
PROBLEM:
Constant force of 50N is applied to a 20kg
block for 10 s.

A. What is the impulse acting on the block?

B. What is the change in the momentum of
the block?
C. What is the final speed of the block if it
was originally at rest?
Given: F=50 N C. p= mv
m=20kg p= m[Vf-Vo]/
t=10s
Vo= 0m/s Vo Vo/
p- Vo= m/ (Vf)
J= ?
m m/
P= ? Vf= p - Vo
Vf= ? m
A. J= F . t
Vf=500 kg./ m/s- O m/s
J= 50 N (10s)
J= 500 N. s
/
20kg

Solution: Vf= 500 m/s

B. P = J 20
p= 500kg.m/s Vf=25 m/s
