34 CLOSED ORGAN PIPE: 4

A glass tube partially filled with water illustrates a closed organ pipe. The end in contact
with water is a node, while the open end is an antinode. At the node the pressure
changes are the largest, while the displacement is minimum (zero). At the open end - the
antinode, it is just the other way - least pressure change and maximum amplitude of
displacement. Taking the end in contact with water to be x = 0, the node condition is
already satisfied. If the other end x = L is an antinode. The normal modes – the natural
1
frequencies of the system are ν = (n + ) v /2L ; n = 0, 1, 2, 3.
2

The fundamental frequency corresponds to n = 0, and is given by v/ 4L. The higher

frequencies are odd harmonics, i.e., odd multiples of the fundamental frequency: 3 v /4L,5
v/ 4L, etc. For a pipe open at both ends, each end is an antinode. It is then easily seen
that an open air column at both ends generates all harmonics.
Referring to the above paragraph answer the following questions.

(i) If we study the vibration of a pipe open at both ends then which of the following
statements is not true.
(a) Odd harmonics of the fundamental frequency will be generated
(b)All harmonics of the fundamental frequency will be generated
(c) Pressure change will be maximum at both ends
(d) The open end will be an antinode
(ii)The fundamental frequency of a open organ pipe is 512Hz.If length is increased the
frequency will (a)Decreases (b) Increases (c) Cannot be predicted (d)remains same
(iii)The fundamental frequency of a closed organ pipe is 20cm is equal to the 2 nd
overtone of a open organ pipe. Find the length of the open organ pipe?
OR Draw diagrams to show reflection of 3rd harmonic and 5th harmonic from a closed
organ pipe.
