TASK.1.

in groups, look at the picture and answer the questions below:

1- What do you think his job is? ………………………………………………………….……………………

2- What are some tools he may need? …………………………………….…………………….……………………

TASK.2. Skim the passage below and match the headings with the paragraphs. Work with a partner.
a- What electricians need for their job. ………………
b- What electricians do. ………………
c- Electrician’s safety hazards. ………………
d- Work Environment. ………………
1. Electricians install and maintain all of the electrical and power systems for our homes,
businesses, and factories. They install and maintain the wiring and control equipment through which
electricity flows. They also install and maintain electrical equipment and machines in factories and a wide
range of other businesses.
2. Electricians work indoors and out, at construction sites, in homes, and in businesses or factories.
The work may be strenuous at times and may include bending conduit, lifting heavy objects, and standing,
stooping, and kneeling for long periods. Electricians risk injury from electrical shock, falls, and cuts, and
must follow strict safety procedures to avoid injuries. When working outdoors, they may be subject to
inclement weather. Some electricians may have to travel long distances to jobsites.
3. Electricians use a range of hand and power tools and instruments. Two of the tools commonly
used by electricians are the fish tape which is used to pull conductors through conduits, or sometimes to
pull conductors through hollow walls, and the conduit bender that is used to make accurate bends and
offsets in electrical conduit. Some of the more common tools are Mustimeter. A Mustimeter is an
instrument for electrical measurement with multiple functions. It is available as analog or digital display.
Common features include: voltage, resistance, and current. Some models offer additional functions.
Another important tool is the cord, rope or fish tape. This is used to manipulate cables and wires through
cavities. Other general-use tools include screwdrivers, hammers, reciprocating saws, drywall saws,
flashlights, chisels, tongue and groove pliers and drills.
4. In addition to the workplace hazards generally faced by industrial workers, electricians are also
particularly exposed to injury by electricity. An electrician may experience electric shock due to direct
contact with energized circuit conductors or due to stray voltage caused by faults in a system. An electric
arc exposes eyes and skin to hazardous amounts of heat and light.
TASK.3. Read the passage again. Are the sentences below true (T) or false (F). Correct the false sentences.

1- Electricians work only for industrial companies. …………...

2- Travelling long distances is part of an electrician’s job. …………...
3- Tools used by electricians cannot be used by other industrial workers. …………...
4- A Mustimeter is used to manipulate cables and wires through cavities. …………...
5- There are no common safety hazards with other industrial workers. …………...
