INTRODUCTION:

The Commonwealth Games were inaugurated as the British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario (Canada), in 1930, with 400 competitors
representing 11 countries. Since then they have been celebrated on 14 other occasions and grown considerably in status. The festival has
undergone name changes that reflect the growing political maturity of member countries, and the changing relationship of Great Britain
to its former empire. From 1930 to 1950, the games were known as the British Empire Games; from 1954 to 1962 as the British Empire
and Commonwealth Games; from 1966 to 1974 as the British Commonwealth Games; and since 1978 as the Commonwealth Games.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games are going to be held in Delhi, India with a population of over 15 million, compared to (2006 games
hosts) Melbourne's 3.7 million and Greater Manchester's 2.5 million population at the 2002 games.

The Commonwealth Games is a multi-sport event held every four years involving the elite athletes of the Commonwealth of Nations. The
first such event, then known as the British Empire Games, was held in 1930. The name changed to British Empire and Commonwealth
Games in 1954, to British Commonwealth Games in 1978 and assumed the current name of the Commonwealth Games in 1978.

As well as many Olympic sports, the Games also include some sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn
bowls, rugby sevens and netball. There are currently 53 Commonwealth nations and 71 participating teams.

Attendance at the Commonwealth Games is typically around 5,000 athletes, which makes it one of the largest international sporting
events in terms of participants.

The four constituent countries of the United KingdomȄEngland, Scotland, Wales and Northern IrelandȄsend separate teams to the
Commonwealth Games, and individual teams are also sent from the British Crown DependenciesȄGuernsey, Jersey and the Isle of ManȄ
and many of the British overseas territories.

Only six teams have attended every Commonwealth Games: Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales.

The city of New Delhi, home to 13.8 million people, will host the Commonwealth Games in 2010. This will be the first time India has
hosted the Games and only the second time the event has been held in Asia.

Delhi is the capital city of India and is rich in culture and history. It stands on the western end of the Gangetic Plain and is bordered by
the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. There are two main districts of the city, Old Delhi the capital of Muslim India between the mid
17th and late 19th centuries with its historic sites, mosques and monuments and New Delhi, the imperial city created by the British Raj
with its imposing government buildings and tree lined avenues.

The proposed dates for the Games are 3 - 14 October 2010 inclusive of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Weather wise the city
experiences an October mean temperature minimum 17.2 degrees centigrade and maximum 31.3 degrees centigrade with humidity
ranging from 31 to 78% for the October and November months.

The Delhi Games Village is to be constructed as a low rise medium development on a 40 acre site in the heart of the capital with a
possible capacity for 8,500 athletes and officials. Existing and new stadium will be used to house the following sports:

Aquatics, Athletics, Badminton, Bowls, Boxing, Cycling, EAD Events, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Rugby 7s, Shooting, Squash, Table
Tennis and Weightlifting.

Delhi won the right to host the 2010 Games by defeating the Canadian city of Hamilton by 46 votes to 22 at the CGF General Assembly
held in Montego Bay in November 2003
